There certainly are several great comedies but it seems that there have been little in the way of good dramas about college. There are some good movies that are tangentially about college like The Graduate, but nothing directly on subject.

Can anybody recommend a college drama or two?

I believe that Animal House sets the standard for the genre, even though literary merits of the taut dramatic tension and realistic characters were too often sacrificed for the sake of the occasional joke.

It’s kind of surprising - I did an IMDB search and there really don’t seem to be many dramatic films about college, and the good ones are even scarcer. “Good Will Hunting,” which has already been mentioned, is terrific. You might also try “School Daze” - one of Spike Lee’s early films, it’s a comedy with dramatic elements and a great cast.

I thought “Mona Lisa Smile” was kind of by-the-numbers and predictable, but it had great production values and some excellent performances from Kirsten Dunst, Marcia Gay Harden, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

I want someone to make a film of “The Secret History,” though I think it would be tough to realize on screen.

on of my favorite movies that takes place in a school setting is “the prime of miss jean brodie”

I loved the Secret History
A novel that is similar in some ways but has fairy tale elements that take s place in a college setting is Pamela Deans interpretation of TamLin
Gaudy Night is another great story that takes place in a college- did they make a BBC production out of that?

I thought one of the best things about Good Will Hunting was the decision to use Elliot Smith’s music in it. Sadly he committed suicide in 2003.
