Are Their Any Good Dramatic Movies About College?

There certainly are several great comedies but it seems that there have been little in the way of good dramas about college. There are some good movies that are tangentially about college like The Graduate, but nothing directly on subject.

Can anybody recommend a college drama or two?

Good Will Hunting. A brilliant movie!

Love Story, okay, not brilliant, but a classic in its way

I believe that Animal House sets the standard for the genre, even though literary merits of the taut dramatic tension and realistic characters were too often sacrificed for the sake of the occasional joke.

I didn’t see it but wasn’t Mona Lisa Smiles about college professor?

“A Beautiful Mind”

Sorry for the mispell I know I wanted “There” not “Their”

“Proof”, really good performance by Gwyneth Paltrow.

Mona Lisa Smile–about Wellesley

Paper Chase–about law school

Legally Blonde

This probably classifies under the ‘college related’…

Reality Bites

Great movie outlining the aftermath of college!

It’s kind of surprising - I did an IMDB search and there really don’t seem to be many dramatic films about college, and the good ones are even scarcer. “Good Will Hunting,” which has already been mentioned, is terrific. You might also try “School Daze” - one of Spike Lee’s early films, it’s a comedy with dramatic elements and a great cast.

I thought “Mona Lisa Smile” was kind of by-the-numbers and predictable, but it had great production values and some excellent performances from Kirsten Dunst, Marcia Gay Harden, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

I want someone to make a film of “The Secret History,” though I think it would be tough to realize on screen.

The Strawberry Statement
Getting Staight
The Graduate

on of my favorite movies that takes place in a school setting is “the prime of miss jean brodie”

I loved the Secret History
A novel that is similar in some ways but has fairy tale elements that take s place in a college setting is Pamela Deans interpretation of TamLin
Gaudy Night is another great story that takes place in a college- did they make a BBC production out of that?

Yea, Love Story!

I thought one of the best things about Good Will Hunting was the decision to use Elliot Smith’s music in it. Sadly he committed suicide in 2003.

Orange County! (maybe not a dramatic movie - but pretty funny!)

The first part of Brideshead Revisited (better read, though).

The Human Stain, tangentally.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

And my favorite fiction, not yet filmed that I know of, White Noise.

Breaking Away

I loved Breaking Away! Also, for med school, what about Gross Anatomy?
