Are There Any Engineering/Technology Think Tanks?

As we all know, there are numerous think tanks that put emphasis on economics, sociology, and politics. There are even some that put emphasis on science, but I have never heard of any engineering think tanks.

Any of the national laboratories…? They’re essentially engineering think tanks. Usually have to have a PhD to work for them (true of most think tanks, actually), and a large quotient are engineering PhDs.

Any large chemical, electronic or aerospace corporation will have an industrial R&D department. Some of the historically famous R&D labs are Bell Labs, Edison’s lab in Menlo Park, DuPont, the Lockheed Skunk Works, IBM’s Thomas J Watson research center, and General Electric labs.

I work at a national lab and it’s pretty close to 30% phD. Even if the work is really advanced, there will still be a need for engineers who don’t need a phD.
