By ‘holdout’, I mean ZERO social media? In my circle of friends and associates, I am the only person I know of with zero social media - and I have no interest in having any; I don’t want to see what you had for breakfast!
What is your definition of social media? I consider this forum social media.
What do you mean? I have a FB account, for example, but I never post and have shared maybe two things (one a kid singing and a dog photo). I do like others posts. No instagram, twitter, whats app ( except for a certain time per year when my kids group uses it for a conference).
LOL, this is being asked on a local media platform. Consider your own threads in the context of
“and I have no interest in having any; I don’t want to see what you had for breakfast!” LOL
I’m not on FB, twitter, instagram, Linkedin, etc. But obviously I’m on here.
I think the OP doesn’t include forum boards where you are anonymous. I am on FB, but getting tired of it. I post a lot and read a lot, but I wouldn’t mind not doing it for awhile. The problem is that’s where my friends connect and p,an get togethers. I’m fairly social, but to this day it bugs me to see pictures where I was included in something.
I opened an Instagram account but never do it. Seriously, it confuses me.
I am very active on social media and have FB, IG, Twitter, LinkedIn, Strava and a few other specialty apps. The good outweighs the bad for me and I value being in touch with people from my past. The politics of the last few years has ruined Facebook in particular to a great extent, as hasome of the stupidity of older users in particular in posting chain type things and fake news.
I think I qualify - No Facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. I do have a Pinterest account.
I probably miss out on some things, but I am a very private person and don’t like idea of posting personal things online. My husband has a Facebook and Twitter account, but uses rarely. Even my kids are kinda casual about social media.
I use a closed-loop social media app as opposed to FB which is open to the wide world, and I am here, so I would not consider myself to be a “holdout”; I don’t do fb/instagram, nor Twitter or LinkedIn. I have not even heard of “strava” till now.
OTOH, my hubby is a true holdout, he does not even like smartphones, lol. And my DS only texts with his friends, which is also pretty rare among his peers.
Not if they’re on this board. CC is a social media platform. I’ll assume the OP means Facebook, InstaGram, etc.
Two Internet boards, including this one, only and will jettison the other when kiddo graduates in May.
I read this board and one for the Shetland Islands–I’m going to go there someday. But I don’t do anything else social media. Years ago the company I worked for wanted to put pictures of all the employees on its Facebook page. I wouldn’t do it. There’s just something about it that makes me avoid it. My brothers are the same way. My kids like social media though.
An organization I’m involved with sometimes puts important information for the members on Facebook, which is kind of annoying since official info is supposed to be desseminated by email. So I miss some stuff, but that’s not enough to get me to sign up for Facebook.
I’m on Pinterest and probably use only ten percent of its features but enjoy myself. Most of my boards are private and I use them as almost notepads.
I’m on Facebook because the dog training school I took my puppies to didn’t use anything else to communicate. All I post about is my dogs. It’s a good way for our kids out of state to see videos of their puppies in the snow.
CC is for when I get online about the humans in my family.
Going to be honest — I’ve lost touch with most friends who aren’t on social media unless I see them IRL. It is MUCH more efficient to keep up that way. One exception I make is a friend who is in prison - he has a good excuse (no access) and we exchange regular newsy snail mail letters. But pretty much anyone else, I’d expected to see their news on social media, and that is where I share mine.
To clarify ; Yes, I mean FB, Instagram, Twitter etc. I don’t mean : This board , texting or emailing! If CC is considered social media, then I retract my statement that I don not have Social Media and I had Peanut Butter & Banana on rye toast for breakfast!
I am on Facebook, Cruise Critic and this site. Facebook allows me to stay current with my relatives that are scattered all around the world - on FB I “only” have family and a very few friends, and no public posting.
My comment to the OP - why not???
I see family around the world I would not otherwise see on a regular basis.
I see - and hear - the sounds of little ones that are too far away for me to visit.
I know when fabulous things happen to friends and family - and when not so fabulous things happen - even in just the course of a day
(note: all that above? I don’t have to reveal a thing about myself by seeing all this - others post it for enjoyment and I get to enjoy! I DO post but my point being, I wouldn’t have to if I was concerned about being totally non-revealing.)
I network with people from around the country - and out of the country - on professional information/research/opportunities.
I can share my work and get exposure for my work initiatives - most of which would not be ever known by others unless it was published in a local newspaper - but if it IS published in a local newspaper or professional journal - I can share it on social media so even more people learn about our work!
I see little highlights from my kids day - where my son ran (because he shares Instagram photos), what my daughter whipped up for brunch, see pics/videos when they travel - I can see these almost instantly. We chat, talk, share across social media and even share serious news items.
News - I am SO much more informed about local and national news because I hear not only about the big things that make the newspaper but the little things that are important but don’t make the paper.
I mean, that’s just a start. Social media is amazing! It’s up to you to be an appropriate consumer of it.
I wouldn’t brag about not reading the paper or watching the news or not talking to my family/friends. And I won’t apologize for enjoying and partaking in social media!
Not sure why people feel it is a badge of honor not to use social media. It is like telling people you won’t email or call and would only communicate in person. Social media is just a tool, it is up to you to use it for your benefit. I got my recent job through Linkedin.
I have a friend who loves to tell me how she doesn’t use FB, and she would me many pictures via email when she is on vacation. I couldn’t be bothered to do the same for her.
I am on Facebook. I joined when D3 moved to the Far East. She would post pictures of her many travels. It kept me connected without needing to talk to her to keep up with her life. She is now mostly on Instagram, but I am not on that.
D1 will occasionally post photos of her children on Facebook. D2 will post no photos of the children on Facebook. I don’t think that either of the teenage grandchildren have Facebook accounts.
I am on this site and another parenting site. I also am required to have Twitter by my office so that I know when court is closed but I don’t subscribe to anything other than the required alerts. That is the extent of my social media. I have zero interest in looking at photos or reading posts. When I am on vacation, I don’t take photos so I don’t have to worry about sending them to anyone. I am not on LinkedIn because I am not looking for a job and I don’t need to network. . I declined to appear in the company newsletter which is put up on the website. I watch the news and news shows on TV and I read the NY Times and other print media. I really just have no use for social media in my life. It’s not a badge of pride not to have social media, it’s just a function of my complete lack of interest in what is out there.
