I’m currently a student at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I plan to transfer to the University of Michigan, but I want to keep my options open. Are there any top 50 colleges or LACs that could accept me as a transfer in junior standing? I’d love to be in New York, but most out-of-state colleges seem to only accept internal transfers.
Background: First generation college student, Southeast Asian
CC GPA: 3.5 (I know, a little on the low side)
Credits: 51
ECs: Created a database for a local charity organization, Kiwanis member, community service award
Intended major: Management Information Systems or Economics
That may be true of some public colleges.
But if you want to transfer to a state-supported school, and think you have a shot at Michigan, why wouldn’t you transfer there (especially if you can attend at in-state rates)?
Private colleges in the top 50 would not restrict transfers only to “internal” students (if by that you mean students whose families live in the same state as the college). However, transfer admission rates to many selective private schools are even lower than the freshman admission rates. For example, Colgate is a top 50 LAC in New York state. For 2014-15, its transfer admission rate was about 13%.
I talked to some uMich students and they told me my 3.5 GPA is too low to transfer into the Computer Science program. Really?! I thought that a 3.5 would be plenty enough, especially from a local CC…
First off, if you are in-state for U Michigan, take that and run with it - it’s a top school.
Second, if you’re interested in figuring out what it takes to get into the CS program, why don’t you PICK UP THE PHONE and call the school and find out, instead of relying on hearsay from students who may or may not know what they are talking about? Go to the source.
