Are there ever exceptions?

I posted this question on the Tisch thread but thougth maybe others might know the answer.

Everything I read here says NYU/Tisch only takes top of the class- top GPA’s, SAT’s. ranking, etc…
But are there any exceptions? Have you run into someone who was not the top-top and still got in? Someone who does not fit the profile and does not have the excellent rankings we see all over this board?

all the time!

There are so many factors contributing to whether or not you get in. Some people get in because there essays kick so many a$$e$ the school can’t resist. Don’t think because you didn’t cure cancer or win an olympic medal you’re not going to get into NYU/Tisch. Most of us are just (above) average.

I know one girl whose grade averages in 9th and 10th were 75 and below (on 100)- which I would guess is mostly C’s, a couple of B’s and probably a few D’s
But, in 11th, she kicked ass- she discovered that she loved history and was so passionate about the subject. She topped her class in history in the 11th grade. She applied as a history major and wrote an amazing essay.
She didn’t have the best extra-curriculars or any leadership positions. or anything special. And she got in ED to NYU.

^ That’s pretty inspiring.

my hs GPA was low anyway. i made that up in college.

Yes, there are exceptions. However, that is what they are exceptions. When you are putting your list together, if you don’t fall into the top range of grades/test scores for a school, it is a reach. You should be aware of which schools are reaches and make sure you have matches and safeties in there to balance out things. You cannot count on being an exception.

I think my D will tell you she felt like she was an exception, or rather as she puts it “lucky”. Her GPA was on the lower end of the posted averages and so were her SAT’s. That said, she did have great EC’s, had a challenging curriculum in HS, and she did well in her artistic review. Because of the academic requirement however, NYU/Tisch, her ‘dream school’ was her ‘reach school’. She continues to count her blessings that she was accepted.

Like cptofthehouse suggests, it is really important to make sure that the list of schools you are applying to has matches and safeties built in. There is no guarantees, even for those with higher statistics. Tisch is incredibly competitive, one of the most competitive schools at NYU.

Wait, I thought Tisch didn’t care that much about GPA/SAT, they focused more on auditions. I’m not a Tisch student, I just had the impression that if your sat/gpa is decent - not amazing - they will focus on your portfolio/audition whatever.
