Are there tests right before fall break?

Question. I see on the schedule for 2010-2011 that there is a break starting on 10/9 and class resumes on 10/13, so its a 4 day weekend. Are there a lot of tests right before that, like mid terms or something?

Asking because D has a special event planned September 30-Oct 3. Wondering if she will have to pull out of it in order to study for tests right before that fall break?

thanks in advance

yes. most classes at cornell will administer 2-3 prelims in a semester rather than 1 midterm.

sometimes classes do 1 prelim and a midterm paper.

usually the dates of exams are printed in the syllabus on the first day of class.

there is no specific midterm period right before fall break. however, prelims start up toward the end of September, so you'll need to check the syllabus right away, like campuscsi said. prelims are just another name for exams, really, although they are often held at night, which I think is kind of unusual. I hope whatever the special event is works out for her!

Yeah, thats usually a period for prelims

Yeah, I had a few prelims/quizzes around that time. But I was happy about that because it meant I wouldn't have to study anything over Fall Break, lol.

i've had papers due AFTER fall break...

or AFTER thanksgiving break...

it's all up to the professors :D

So if she knows at the beginning of the school year that she will be gone from Thursday night September 30th till Sunday night October 3rd, will the profs work with her to either take prelims early or let her take them when she returns---or should we just forget about this special event that we have had planned for over a year?

I hate to set her up for failure in her first semester there, so am wondering if being gone then will be just too much for a freshman?

Plan for her not being able to attend but if she can swing it academically then it's a go.
You won't know until her fall schedule is set.
She may not want to/cannot miss that much school.

the last post is right, for planning purposes. in many intro classes there are pretty strict rules about prelims and when they are administered. taking them early or late is quite rare, and in general it's a lot less flexible than what I was used to in high school.

Thanks everyone!
