as for my junior year, i am thinking about taking 5 AP classes.
these classes are
APUSH
AP psych
AP human geo
AP Environmental science
AP chemistry
as you can see most of these classes fall in the social studies spectrum and i have no plans in pursuing a social studies related field ( i want to become a software engineer). So, my question is will taking these kind of classes diminish my chances of getting into a university with an intended major in computer science.
i am thinking of taking Ap calc AB and BC by senior year along with AP principles of computer science. Main idea being that i’ll take more science/ math classes in senior year. This brings me to my next question, Would universities care if majority of my AP classes are social studies related in junior year and math related in senior year? do they just look at the classes i take, or does the year in which i take those classes play a factor into the admission process?
“Would universities care if majority of my AP classes are social studies related in junior year and math related in senior year?”
If you are going to apply for CS, or for anything STEM related, do you want to do this with your social studies grades but without your math related grades? I was a STEM sort of guy (ended up as a math major), and in my experience a lot of STEM related students have better grades in STEM related courses. These are the grades that I would rather have had universities looking at when deciding whether to admit me.
Personally I would avoid APUSH because IMHO the “effort to value ratio” is too slanted towards effort.
However, I don’t think that anyone other than you can decide for you what are the right courses and what are the wrong courses for you.
thanks for responding! so, i’m still going to do all the math classes (except physics) and CS classes offered at my school during my senior year, the question really is whether or not doing these classes will hurt my chances of being admitted even by the slightest.
No. Although they may question it if you are taking 3 social studies and 2 science classes while omitting a classes in one or more other core subjects.
Don’t think “The more APs the better!”
Think “How can I take the most challenging core courses that I can do well in”
So think first about AP English, then Honors Precalc or Honors Alg 2 or AP Calc, then make sure you will have taken Bio, Chem, Physics and then at least one AP version of those.
