Are these bad responses to short answer questions?

Question: My favorite thing about last Tuesday was
Answer: “…that I conquered my fear of doing things alone and rode the ferry by myself. Although it was only a 15 minute ride, I felt more confident in myself instantly.”

Question: The one thing I never expected to gain from doing community service was
Answer: “…guilt. When I worked with homeless and underprivileged kids in NYC, I realized that I could have bigger problems than my iPhone’s terrible battery life.”

Although these responses are honest, which is what the adcoms are asking for, they may paint me in some sort of a bad light.

Those are fine.

They definitely don’t paint you in a bad light. However, they’re very very VERY cliched responses, especially the second one; adcoms constantly complain of hearing the same “I helped someone less fortunate and now I feel grateful for what I have” story. Your responses are well-written, and the right length, so don’t worry about that–just try to find unique topics! :)

If there’s any doubt in your mind that they could be better, go make them better. While they are fine, “fine” doesn’t cut it in the admissions process. Show a unique perspective.

I suggest writing at least ten responses for each and then selecting the ones that are unique.

They’re very brief. I would suggest making them longer. Brainstorm before you write so it is easier!

Also… man I am PETRIFIED of the ferry, you never know who you’ll find on there… LOL. Take the bus, people!!
