As someone who has a close relative working in global health, I can tell you that the best way to get into the field is to emphasize the “health” part - get a degree in one of the health professions. The world is full of “idea rats” who like to tell everyone what to do and the health professionals often resent those who haven’t gotten their hands dirty directly dealing with the problems involved. Take a look at the leadership of WHO or any other global health organization - they are almost always health professionals, whether that is physicians, pharmacists, epidemiologists, etc.

@MrMom62: Exactly what I was thinking. I would like to get a MD and a graduate degree in public health or public policy because, as you said, I think medical expertise is needed if you are going to be forming policy on public health issues.

Then there is no reason you couldn’t get your undergrad in political science while doing the pre-med courses - plenty of LACs would make that possible. And I do believe I have seen some joint MD/MS programs in public health, though don’t ask me where.

@MrMom62: That’s what I was thinking of doing: majoring in political science (and global/public health, if it’s offered) and taking the pre-med courses. I’m glad to see someone knowledgeable thinks that is feasible!
