I have a 3.1 GPA (unweighted), 1850 SAT score, haven’t taken the ACT yet, and a couple extracurriculars and volunteer hours. I was in the honors program freshman year and I am going into two AP classes next year. (I graduate 2012)
I plan on majoring in Russian/Eastern European Studies and minor in Russian language and culture. I really want to get into UVM because it’s one of the few schools that offer Russian studies that I have a chance of getting into.
I’ve looked around on Princeton review and collegeboard and this site a bit, and I’ve seen people with lower GPA and lower SAT than I have and higher GPA and SAT have been accepted. Should I apply for early action? Is there anything else I should do to make my resume look more appealing to UVM? I plan on taking the US History, Global History, and Literature SAT subject tests. If I pass all my regents this year I will have an advanced regents diploma (not sure if they take that into account).
Also I am from New York.

Your SAT score could be a bit better, but it’s within the average at least, according to what’s written on CollegeBoard. Pretty much right in the middle, actually. The rigor of your classes look okay, I guess, though there isn’t much you can do about them right now.

Right now, I guess that all you can do is do your best, continue with ECs, write a great application essay, get good recommendations, and demonstrate interest by requesting information and maybe even getting in contact with the admissions officers.

Early action would increase your chances of getting in, but not by a lot.
