Are really honorable awards or mentions in competitions such as Intel/Siemens, RSI, Tanglewood Music camp, national volunteer awards, national essay contests, etc, and more necessary? I know they obviously help and make you shine, but if say, you apply to HYPSM, they won’t just disregard you because you don’t have these types of things… right? Could you get in anyways, with outstanding extracurriculars in your own interests. For example, if you’re good at Piano, and you’ve performed a few times in NYC through competitions, or if you’re on a varsity sport, but not nationally ranked… these types of things are still good right?

of course;

They are???

i’m pretty sure Intel/Siemens is a big one

“or example, if you’re good at Piano, and you’ve performed a few times in NYC through competitions, or if you’re on a varsity sport, but not nationally ranked”

if you’ve got anything that sets you apart from everyone else, something that makes you unique, then it’s good

Ok, they help, but they arent necessary. I know a lot of pretty amazing people at princeton, but DEFINITELY not everyone has all of these prestigious awards.

I don’t think playing in the major halls in New York is a huge deal if you’re from the NYC metro area, as there are so many opportunities for suchaccomplishments. However, if you support that with a strong arts supplement, it’s sure to help.
