So, I recently sent an email and recruiting questionnaire to USC to ask about possibly being recruited. The Varsity Assistant Coach emailed me the next day about my inquiry. The message goes along these lines:

Dear Xxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for your interest in USC Rowing. I know you have aready emailed the head coach with a little bit more information about yourself, however I would like to learn more about you and perhaps offer you a spot in our 2012 recruiting class.

Please send me your high school transcript, SAT or ACT scores, coach recommendation letter and full athletic resume (since you have been rowing for shorter time, include other sports played). Tell me why you started rowing and what do you like about the sport; where do you see yourself going in rowing; where do you see yourself going on academics? (that is - what are your goals?).

You may either send me an email, or - give me a call.

If USC is one of your top-3 schools, you should fill out and submit the USC Common Application (including the USC supplement) by December 1st.

Let me know if you have any questions,

All the best,

I wasn’t 100% sure that I wanted to Row in college because I’ve only recently started the sport (6 months ago), but I’m good at it. That’s why I waited so long in the season to decide that I wanted to do it. So is this a good sign? Would I have a chance at recruitment even though my academics aren’t exactly phenomenal?

Yes, they are interested. Doesn’t mean they’re making an offer, but if you’re new, you don’t have a long paper trail or connection through coaches, previous national regattas, etc.

One step at a time.
They are interested in learning a lot more about you. THEN they will decide if they are interested in recruiting you. So get them all the information he asked for pronto. And dont forget to complete all the parts of your USC application by Dec 1, as he mentioned.

They are interested…but you dont know if they send out emails to everyone who fills out a recruit questionnare (dont really know how big the rowing community is). You never know about the tactics used by college coaches. Do everything that they ask of you for sure. You’ll get a greater deal of insight into the extent of their interest by doing this.

Apple,
This is your invitation to begin an email dialogue/relationship with a coach. By ALL means respond to the email if USC is a place you would like to learn more about. While emails like this may be generated en masse, the coaches begin to see who responds to them with sincere interest, and that helps them narrow down their list. The most important thing to remember is that, for the most part, coaches are interested in athletes who are interested in them. If you don’t show interest, it’s likely these emails will stop coming.

Apple - I’m gathering you are a senior. My perspective is mostly for Juniors, many of whom are also receiving these kind of introductory interest letters.

Apple, Did you look at the roster? All the girls are big girls. So many from out of the country. You are a senior…you can just walk on? USC is AMAZZZINGGGGGG!!! What’s your ERG time?

How can apple be senior and not already have applied? gap year? sounds like the email in question is, as other posters noted, introductory; they’d like to hear more but it’s far too early to know how it will go. both sides seem to need more info in order to pursue this meaningfully
