Are you an elitist?

I’d say I’m pretty elitist sometimes. I don’t isolate myself from people I consider less intelligent than myself because I’d only have 5 friends. I do tend to put people in their place when they think they’re as smart as or smarter than me and they’re very obviously not.

ehem
^^I’d like to point out a difference between “elitist” and “arrogant elitist:” there is one.

And how can anyone expect those aspiring to Harvard, etc. be impressed with a state school, like on an “awestruck” level? I’m “glad” for people to achieve their potentials, but that’s just not realistic. It’s not arrogant to lack the “impressed” feeling.

materialistically, yes

what is the difference between elitist and arrogant elitist? I am sincerely asking,

Um. I’d like to say 'm not, but at the same time, I really, really, really, dislike hanging around overly dumb/ignorant people, especially when they think they’re smarter then they really are.

Other than intelligence/wisdom however, then no I’m not an elitist (I’m pretty chill with everyone)

Additionally, it’s also sort of impossible to be much of an elitist at my school. Its pretty small (around 300 students in the high school), so I’m forced by some extent to hang out with people from every group.

I am sort of elitist. Most of my friends are at the top of their class academically. We all take the same AP/ Honors classes, are involved in the same clubs, and run XC. Most of us aspire to go to Ivy league colleges or other top schools. I am not completely elitist though. It is important to get to know other kinds of people because once we are done with school and enter the adult world, we will have to deal with many different people with a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.

I am like the opposite of elitist. I’m at the top of my class, have a respectable SAT score, interned at NASA, and am generally known as like the smart person in my school…but I hang out with kids who are pulling Bs and Cs and people who are aiming to go to public state schools (one of my friends is gunning for community college). Heck yeah.

elitism (n) - consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

arrogance (n) - offensive display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride.

You can be aware of your favored state in life and also be proud of it, without being an overbearing d**che.

do i play lacrosse? yes. do i get hook up with chicks? yes. do i hook up with chicks because i play lacrosse?

no, i am very wealthy.

Sort of. I generally pretend to be more moderate though.

Also, my criterion sort of differ from most others (and it really depends on the population I have substantial interaction with - I was most elitist when I was in middle school). Intelligence is, of course, important, but it is secondary and not sufficient. I’m mostly elitist with respect to smart people who feel alienated from others (especially smart people with social anxiety). But in the end, I don’t even feel any emotional connection with people who are very rational (aka people who read LessWrong - everyone there is SO old), so then I don’t even identify with the group that I thought I’d most identify with.

^^your life is so much more bro than mine.

Is it just me, or have people been throwing this word around more since election time? Now I immediately associate “elitist” with Obama, and it drives me nuts.

Hahahahahaha, I never understood how liberals came to being associated with elitism. You still have the very dumbest of the dumb minorities, who are liberal, and having a college education does not make you elitist. I more laugh when conservatives use elitist in derogatory manner, essentially saying that they’re proud and stupid uneducated oafs.

I’m kind of elitist. Like I know I’m smarter than everyone else in my grade including the valedictorian but I dumb myself down when I’m talking to people and most of my friends are (not to be mean just honest but they are nice) a couple sandwiches away from a picnic

I’m an ice cream elitist because I only eat Haagen Dazs
I’m a juice elitist because I only drink the Simply Juice Brand

Haagen Dazs gets really tiring after a while. Now I’m back to the cheap but more intensely flavored brands.

Obviously.

Now bring me my soda.

I only eat Blue Bell

Okay okay, you caught me I’m an elitist. You’ll never see me eating disgustful food at fast food establishments like McDonald’s or Burger King.

I prefer Wendy’s and In-N-Out. ;)

I am a bit of elitist when a movie is made of the book. I always declare, “The book is always so much better” and look down upon the people who only see the movie. They don’t know what they are missing.
