Are you facebook friends with anyone who is not really a friend?

I signed up at an on-line travel planning site, and one of the perks is that you can facebook-friend (I guess that is a verb now) the director, who posts timely updates on his facebook page.

Just wondering if this is common. Are there business or celebrity people who are your facebook friends?

I am " friends " with someone I never met…but it is business related organization that offers scholarships to students that are relevant to our family ;)

I am a fan of some celebrities ( Ina Garten , Ellen DeGenreres, i.e. ) and businesses too , if that counts

I’m facebook friends with a number of fellow Zumba instructors from around the country, who aren’t my “real friends”. Many of them post videos from their classes - a great way to share ideas for music/choreography.

I use Facebook for networking so am “friends” with a fair amount of people I don’t know. It gets a little weird though sometimes. One of these male “friends” tried to friend my D recently. I unfriended him pronto.

I have been friended by some HS people…and I cannot picture who they were back then

I am friends with a lot of people I haven’t ever met. Through my sport, a lot of us are friends and it has been really fun. Also- a number of people from this site are my facebook friends and it’s been fun getting to “know” them. It’s very common.

no…everyone is my friend on FB. And I’m the exception for sure. I get invites from folks I don’t really know and ignore them. Even on Linkedin, I feel like I need to know the folks in my network. It’s personal style really. This may change for me as I get used to the whole deal…but for now, I’m wary. I’m imagining the extroverts out there are fine with big networks populated with folks they don’t really know IRL.

The girl who routinely beat me at every elementary track & field day in the events we both entered (and often we were the only two…) friended me a while back. I haven’t spoken to her since about sixth grade, and we weren’t close then… Nor are we now.

I am a fan of Evan Lysacek :D

I have ignored by boss’ friend invitation for months now. She finally brought it up this week  I told her I definitely intend to accept it once I don’t work for her any more (I am a contractor, knew her through work before this engagement), but for now I’d like to be able to gripe about work occasionally without worrying about who sees it  She laughed, and seemed okay with this explanation.

I am fb fans with one of my favorite singer songwriters. Rather than have a fan page she just invited her fans to be fb friends. I have declined friend requests from a local restaurant and a local politician.

^^^
ya see, that’s just the problem. I was brought up with a rule that said “don’t put anything in writing that you wouldn’t want published in the NY Times.” I don’t really believe that FB is private. I have friends who have gotten into trouble by relating what she said on FB about this and that. I don’t think I’d ever feel comfortable with a boss in my network. linkedin works well for that.

I put the majority of people on limited profile to keep things even more private

I have a " friend " that I went to hs with…she is a collector…tried to friend my husband who she has never and will never met…weird I think.
Her list is so large that I think she just ■■■■■■ other people’s friend list to see who she can add and who will accept her…I sometimes get requests from people I barely knew and feel a bit awkward about it. I don’t have anything on there that I would be worried about anyone viewing…I accepted a request from a woman that I used to work with over 20 yrs ago…now I remember why she drove me nuts back then :D

Sure I do. I have people from my school that I don’t particularly like, but don’t particularly hate, so I accepted their requests (I rarely friend people myself).

But everyone from my school that I know has my profile limited because there is certain–ahem religious and political–information that it is not beneficial for them to know.

I also people I have never met IRL friended. People I’ve known for years online. Writing buddies from various websites and such. Then of course, I have people from the W&M class of 2014 I met on here. =)

I just got a friend request from a cousin I haven’t seen in over 20 years. I am sure he got my name from another cousin I see about once every 2 years. I am fans of businesses I frequent because I like the coupons. I also occasionally get friend requests from people I know I don’t know and just ignore them. My 16yo S tells me to accept them all because he who has the most friends wins/gets a prize/is the coolest? I don’t know what but it isn’t a popularity contest for me.

Toneranger, this is a little ambiguous, as my “boss” was a co-worker at a previous position. But still… I have been ignoring her request for a lloonngg time. And we are already joined up on LinkedIn. I don’t really post any griping about my work, but still… I just feel wierd about most of the people I work with knowing that much about my personal life.

intparent…I’m with you on blending the work and personal life. I have some dear friends who I met in the workplace over the years…and no longer work with. I no longer consider these to be work relationships so those people are cool. And I find it embarrassing to have to ignore requests. Even on linkedin (my painter wanted to be in my network but he is my ex-painter after doing a bad job so…I don’t think so).
All that said, more and more of my friends are making the leap and joining up…and it IS fun to see all those pics and postings. I don’t do much myself…but then again, I lurked on this board for a year or two before I started posting. We’ll see…

I have barely friended any one, I wait for others to friend me ;)

I don’t friend alot either - tend to wait for people to friend me. One of my flaws, hate to be told “no”!

I try not to confirm friends if I don’t know the person. However, I am in touch with many former classmates from elementary/high school through a Yahoo group and FB friends with some of them. The other day, the wife of one of those friends friended me. I was a bit surprised as I’ve never met her and only know him. But I’ve certainly heard him talk about his family over the years. I confirmed the friendship because it seemed like it would be rude not to, but it was the first time I became FB friends with someone I’d never had contact with.

One tip: you can remove people from your newsfeed, even if you leave them as friends. This is good if you want to check in on them occasionally (or let them see what you post), but don’t want an update every time they feed the cat.
