Are you googleable?

This is going to sound very weird but I read another post in the Yale forum where a poster (current Yale student) made a comment about an URM she knew having low scores and not being worthy of being there. When someone mentioned that the student could have had great ECs and awards (on top of recommendations) she said that she googled the students name and got nothing while her own name resulted in many mentions.

Now Arrogance 101 aside, the googling part stuck with me. I googled myself and the only thing that came up was a published story I wrote in the 4th grade. Is having well-known (or googleable) accomplishments really that big of a plus? I have plenty of things but my name does not show up on their website.

It has me a bit freaked out? is it a common procedure for the schools to google applicants?

PS. Im an international canadian transfer hopeful btw

I don’t think being “googleable” is that big of a deal. However, I’m “googeable”: i have many results (that correspond to me) and I’m no google image search.

Yeah i’m googleable a few random things about me pop up when you search me,

I’m googleable. hahaha. I don’t know how many schools bother to do this, and plus, that means that people with “weird”/unique names and very plain names (names like… Daniel Kim or Andrew Lee, etc) will be either good or bad, depending on your achievements, etc. haha

Fun fact: when I google my username, 3,150 of my now 3,400+ posts are found.

if you are not googlable, you don’t exist ;)

but seriously, I think you will only be in trouble if you claim to have done something that is googlable (like winning a medal in the Olympics), but your name does not come up

mine come up in Google :)

Im a sophomore, and my name didn’t come up! is that normal?

… if you’re a sophomore why are you on this forum…
that’s normal. relax. it doesnt really matter-- that’s why you’re filling out an application instead of giving them only your name and high school to google.
… though I am sure plenty of sophomores are googlable. (I was, at least)

heh I share a last name with a very famous company, and a first name with an important person in this company, so it’s impossible to find me. even if I did win a medal at the olympics, i still doubt i’d be on the first page.

haha…I’m googleable only if you are very specific with my name. You have to first put my legal name, then the American name I use casually (I’m asian. -_-) and finally my last name.

I do believe googling will be a common tool for admissions within the next five years. The degree of familiarity with alterntaive media and writing ability does get highlighted on a web platform adn may indeed become as important as ones ability on paper…hmmmm I just read that …sounds scary…

…in any case my real name comes up with the first page full of my hits :)
