Are you raedy for the storm?

My husband’s company has offices in CT, RI, NY, NJ, MA, and ALL were closed today because of the road/driving bans in all of those states. And the employees were not expected to work from home. The offices were just closed. Period.

It wasn’t like there was a lot of business for them to transact. Everything was closed today. And there wasn’t even mail delivered.

Finally snowing at my house. We might get a few quick inches. Looks very pretty.

“Hanna, sometimes they have to turn the power off when working on sections of the lines. They can’t exactly fix these when they are live. This includes during construction.”

Sure, but this was an accident. When they do it knowingly, they warn the buildings, the buildings publish a notice to the residents of the hours of shutoff, etc. Here, the crews just screwed up.

Our power gets turned off every so often for maintenance of the grid or part of it. We do not get warnings.

And Hanna, are you saying that they have accidentally broken something more than once? If so…maybe they should be turning it off to do the work.

Just saying.

Well, the forecast for Maine was NOT a bust. My husband and I just had an adventure. We wanted to put our third car in a public parking lot, so we headed out in our Camry and Tahoe. We had to go only about three miles or so. It was hard to see the road. We got to the Visitor Information Center and I turned in where I thought I was supposed to go. Oops. The Tahoe ground to a halt and wouldn’t go forward, even with 4WD engaged! And DH was in the Camry right behind me. He got out and said, “You’re not on the road - it’s to the left.” So we were STUPID! It’s the first time in 28 years of living here that something like this has happened. DH started digging out the Tahoe. A little while later, a plow truck came by and got the road clear. It took even longer to get the Camry out. I had to walk in front of the Tahoe until we got back to the main road, because the just-plowed road was already covered. Cumberland Farms was open, though! We got gas and coffee, then drove home safely. Whew!

ML. Whew! Stay inside and enjoy the view out the window!

“Hanna, are you saying that they have accidentally broken something more than once? If so…maybe they should be turning it off to do the work.”

Yes. They aren’t working on these lines; they are building a new platform for the subway station. When they’ve turned them off by accident, they’ve said, “We didn’t realize that shutting off X would also shut off Y.” That’s what the city needs to know and communicate to its crews. I haven’t had any problem with planned shut-offs with warnings so that people can plan to shower elsewhere or whatever they need to do.

@MaineLonghorn, that must have been exhausting, both mentally and physically!

Now curl up by the fire in some comfy clothes with some hot cocoa and then take a nap.

@Nrdsb4, that sounds awfully good, but I’m on a 30-day cleanse (Whole30) and cannot have hot chocolate! I will curl up, though!

Glad you made it back in one piece, @MaineLonghorn. Did you park in the visitor info lot off 295? I’m somewhat surprised they would let you, although presumably they have to keep it clear in case someone is stranded on the highway. (Is the highway even open, I wonder?)

It’s still coming down hard here, and if anything it seems windier. You can’t even tell that our driveway was plowed this AM, and I have yet to notice a vehicle going by on the road. (And it is not a subdivision-type road, but a major E/W link.) I’m going to have to break down, bundle up, and go visit the chickens to refresh their water supply and gather the eggs.

First thing I’ve seen stirring: a squirrel running through the trees. Brave soul.

@Consolation, yes, that’s the one. When I was stuck sitting in the Tahoe, I could see plow trucks and vehicles on 295. The road through the visitor’s center was open, but the commuter lot had not been plowed. We parked the Camry next to a truck in the truck parking lot. I hope they don’t tow us. Can’t do anything about it now!

WGME is showing 20 to 30 inches for our entire area now. That’s an update since early this morning.

I didn’t know you had chickens! Cool.

I heard our plow guy in the driveway. So I called him an hour or so later to say thanks for coming out on such a ridiculous day. He said it was a treat to hear that instead of the usual “you plowed my car in” and worse.

Those folks in the Boston area, and north and east of there are getting hammered. It’s a good night to say inside! Hope it all winds down soon for you all.

“Well, the forecast for Maine was NOT a bust.”

I am glad it wasn’t a bust for Maine as I told my S yesterday to please not to drive during the storm. I could hear the eye rolling through the phone. Hopefully he has heeded my advice.

It’s actually a fact that moms can indeed hear eye rolling through the phone.

T^ rue dat.

My friend just posted this on facebook and since we are pretty much all mom’s here, had to share.

Haha @emilybee My daughter posted this to my Facebook page. I have been sending her texts at BC not that I’m worried but just interested as I am a Bostonian living in the SF Bay Area where my daughter grew up.

^ Uh huh, sure.

I’m confused. Why did you move your car? (We done live in snow country and I don’t understand.)

I don’t know why ML had to move her car…but around here, some folks park one car on the street. When there is a parking ban, those cars need to be moved. Many places open up municipal lots so that the cars are off the streets (and the streets can be plowed).
