The blizzard of 78 is the storm that all others are measured against in Mass. I was in high school and lived on Cape Cod, where we got mostly rain. I remember being disappointed about that, and amazed at the homes in Scituate being swallowed by the ocean.
In my family , we always seemed to bake during snowstorms, so I think that is where my love for cooking in such weather comes from.

I’m in the Philly suburbs and I hear everything from 8 - 24 inches, depending on what track the storm takes. Hey, I got Girl Scout cookies today, I’m ready for anything!
I was working at Deaconness/Beth Israel during storm of '68. I cross country skied to hospital, and worked in ER 3 days. They fed us for free. Lots of adventures that week.
DW supposed to fly overseas from Newark on Tuesday. I wouldn’t mind if the business trip were cancelled 
Latest prediction for nyc is 20" to 30" - blizzard conditions starting Momday night. DH went to Costco and the supermarket to pick up a few things and said that both were jammed.
Funny thing is I have emergency shelter training Monday night. It would be ironic if it was canceled because of the weather. (In our town, we have one of the relatively few Homeland Security approved programs for medical response volunteers and emergency response volunteers.)
What I miss with a blizzard is my kids. We would go out for blizzard walks. When my oldest was little, we ended up on top of a hill near our house with 60MPH winds and snow drifts obliterating the stairs down (and the streets dangerous because the drifts were too high for plows to see you). So my kid laid down in her snowsuit and we slid all the way down hill, street by street. It was incredible fun. Blizzard walks became a regular thing. Hurricane walks too when we were in FL. In one hurricane, we stopped for a while in a ravine where hundreds of birds had gathered. They couldn’t flee so we sat with them. That was really neat: all these wild birds, big ones too, sitting all around us and relaxing as they realized we were just there to sit.
You have to respect nature but not be scared unnecessarily.
My D and her H are supposed to fly into Newark from Florida Tuesday. Probably not going to happen. Luckily for them, the condo they are staying at belongs to a relative of his, and they are welcome to stay as long as they need. I am jealous.
We are expecting temps in the 70’s this week in Dallas. That’s a little early to be this warm. I’d rather have snow-though certainly not 40 inches!
@chocchipcookie, now is the time for you to take some action. You don’t have to take that flight as scheduled. I’m not sure who you are flying with, but I’m sure they have a similar policy to Delta: https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/advisories/northeast-inclement-weather.html
Basically, if you are flying through one of the many affected cities, until Jan 30th, you can make a one time change, with no fee. If you feel that you would be fine flying the direct, why not call your airline and see if you can get the direct flight for no cost? If that’s not available, maybe another connection flight through a city that won’t be affected. Either way, if your flight is cancelled or delayed, you get a refund, but why not be proactive and find another routing or another day to fly that might avoid the weather?
We got 40" of snow in the blizzard 2 years ago (we were in one of the severe bands), so I’m hoping this one isn’t as bad. I never understand all the people who clear out shelves at the supermarket…the streets are usually cleared in a day or two.
In 1978, I was a grad student in Indiana. The governor declared martial law and anyone out on the roads risked arrest. There was a scheduled basketball game and the other team had gotten there before the storm, so, after a day’s delay for the storm, the game was played and anyone who could walk to the arena could get in for free. Students and others were slogging through the snow piles to get there. We all had cabin fever and couldn’t wait for a diversion. One of my better memories of grad school.
^^Thanks. I’ve been tracking the weather all day from where I’m leaving and where I’m changing planes. I may just miss the brunt of it by a couple of hours if the planes actually take off on time. If not, I’ll deal with it at the airport once I know if they are taking off or not. Maybe they can figure out then another flight or maybe if I’m lucky I’ll miss the storm. Yes, I’ll be flying into an airport to change planes below Philly. The weather channel predicts less than 1 inch in where I take off at that time and just an inch or so later in the afternoon for my connecting flight. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I don’t want to be stuck here if I can actually make it there tomorrow. Last year I got stuck down there for 3 extra days due to a snowstorm up here! No argument from me!

D1 cancelled her recruiting trip at Cornell. I came out to NJ early to see my mom then heading back to NY on Mon to to hunker down for the storm.
About 10-12 years ago, we were expecting one of those 1-2 wallops of snow. The first storm was minor and the next one was to be the stronger of the storms. We had recently brought a solid white, deaf Maine Coon into our home. We had him flown from Oklahoma to NJ…He was just getting settled and used to our home with our other MCs when we could not find him anywhere in our house, We searched high and low and we were convinced that he accidentally got outside. So we were outside, on our three acre property searching trees, the river, the dock…had our golden retriever out to help, hoping against hope that we wouldn’t lose our white , deaf cat in snow….none of us slept at all that night , but the next morning, we heard loud meows coming from a kitchen cabinet…he somehow got in there and decided he was done sleeping…never did find out how he got in there, but it never happened again. A few years later, we had a minor fire , and he slept thru the firemen coming through the house checking for hot spots too
^^^^I’ve done the search the whole house and neighborhood for the lost cat, only to find she had purposely hidden herself UNDER all the many throw pillows on the bed in the guest room. DH said “I told you there was no good reason to have that many pillows on a bed!” I had even looked behind the pillows on that bed, but didn’t realize she had crawled underneath them all.
More than 10 years ago H and I were going on a trip and a snowstorm was predicted. The weather people were incredibly histrionic and we figured they were just overreacting again. Wrong! We got 30" of snow and actually attempted to drive to the airport until we heard on the radio that it was closed. By the time we made it back to our neighborhood, snow in the street was higher than our bumper. The bumper of our honda civic!
We somehow made it out two days later but for my 40th birthday, all our empty fridge would yield was a bad frozen burrito.
FYI - flush able kitty litter gives you traction when poured under your tires.
I wish CC still had member’s location listed under their screen names so I could read posts and know what area you’re talking about as there seems to be a wide variety of what is being forecasted.
(D is in South Boston if anyone has any predictions - regardless, I’m assuming she’s going to be working from home on Tuesday - she works downtown.)
Oldfort- Haha, D1 had to cancel her trip to recruit at Cornell because of what the Swiss National Bank did unexpectantly a week or so ago. It wrecked complete havoc in currency trading. She said it was the most interesting & worst (short) time in her career! And she really enjoys recruiting at Cornell.
D2 was visiting for the weekend and is suppose to go back to Boston tomorrow driving right into 3 to 40 inches! I asked her to please get up early and leave. She is taking the attitude that they are always wrong and no need to worry. She thinks I am being overly dramatic because I am telling her the forecast and suggesting she leave early ( about a 4.5 hour drive from here w/o traffic or weather).
Youth drive me crazy because they think things are not really going to happen or will not happen to them!
