@morrismon, my H just sent me the evening briefing report from National Weather Service and one of the maps had the onset of steady snow to begin about noon in NYC/Westchester Co and 3pm in Hartford if it helps any.
Apparently we could get 20-30". Of course dh is out of town. (I can’t tell you how many years the January Gordon conference has coincided with a blizzard!) At least S2 is around to help shovel. This may be the year that I wish we had a generator! I’ll be curious to see if the carpet guys actually make it here to install on Tuesday as scheduled. They are local so it’s not out of the realm of possiblity. I did go shopping today and made sure I had enough to last for a few days.
I was at Harvard for the 78 Blizzard. We had over 3 feet. They cancelled classes for the first time in 300 years. I remember a lot of the cafeteria workers who lived near the shore south of Boston lost everything. There were clothing drives for them afterwards.
Speaking of snow, here’s a video I saw on Bing. I know there are a log of doggie lovers here on CC.
No word yet from my company about work tomorrow. The company has closed shop early on other occasions when A large storm was imminent. We’re in Metro NYC so it’s predicted that we’ll get slapped silly with snowfall starting at about Noon. Made a brief trip to a neighborhood market early this evening and it was more or less normal. On the other hand, a friend who lives near a large chain grocery store said it was packed this afternoon and the shelves were bereft of bread and milk.
I am bringing my mom back to NYC with me. If we get 2 ft of snow and electricity should go out at her house, it won’t be pretty. She is going to drive me crazy though.
We’re expecting 2’ of snow in Downstate NY starting around 1pm on Monday. Storm warnings go through Wednesday afternoon. Our stores were packed Friday night and I’m sure it was just as bad today.
I am really hoping it is all just hype. Full gas tank in three cars, full cans of gas for portable generator, and enough food to last a week. Spending far too much time watching specialized weather forecasts on Twitter. School dismissed at 10:30 tomorrow and I can’t imagine school opening Tues or Wed, although snowfall totals have decreased from 24-36 inches to 20-30, so that is something!
I’m sure it would be different if I had kids to feed, but now and then I’ve kind of enjoyed the challenge of having to make a meal out of what I had in the house sans milk, eggs, etc. It’s like a cooking game show: you have a can of beans, chicken noodle soup, barbecue sauce, and a cabbage. Go!
So D has a good friend in NYC who goes to visit her every year in LA in January… friend is supposed to fly out Wednesday - any predictions on whether she’ll make it out or not?
Not lookin good. I thought I heard on the news that they were repositioning planes, so even if the airports are clear Weds there might not be q plane there to take the passengers.

Luckily they have a week together, so one day won’t hurt too much.
and NYC-LA is a popular route so maybe the repositioning, if its occurring, wont affect that route.
I’m in the area where two feet of snow is expected, and as a lifelong New Englander with no fear of the white stuff, my only concern is losing power from the predicted wind gusts or the weight if snow on wires and trees. If we lose power mid storm, the repair trucks won’t be able to get out till all the roads are cleared, and that could be quite a while. Meanwhile, it’ll get darn cold in the house. During past long power outages we’ve decamped to a hotel, but that’s not an option if our street isn’t plowed.
On the positive side, a cashier at the supermarket told me they had gotten in 500 extra gallons of milk today. So we may be cold, but we won’t lack calcium!
Well I am guessing I am going to be stuck in Philadelphia. Was supposed to fly out on Tuesday. Flight has not been cancelled yet but American is waiving all change fees. Wondering what the likelihood is of this flight going out on Tuesday. Really was hoping to get home in time for my son’s birthday on Wednesday. :-S
Looks like they dropped the totals a bit for me. 8-12 now. Hoping it is at the low end because the EOC is being activated this morning so H won’t be home to do any of the shoveling. I can handle doing a deck path and a bit of lawn so the little dog can go out.
Probably shouldn’t mention it, but with the predicted totals, I wonder about roof collapse. Everything else is an adventure, provided you don’t pick these couple of days for appendicitis or heart attack. For most people it will be something to remember and a great opportunity for outdoor play once the system passes. Hope everyone stays safe, do the shoveling in bits and sit back in awe at what nature has in store for us.
Looks like flights are being cancelled today and tomorrow. And since flights heading west may depart later than some heading east, maybe it will work out, teriwtt.
I looked at the FB updates ( yes, plural ) that happened overnight from local meteorologist. It seems like might not get hit as hard as they thought we would. I think I might be a little disappointed if we dodge this bullet. I am still a big kid when it comes to the first snowstorm…last winter , I was pretty tired of it when it was still coming at the end of March
