Are you ready for some football?

I didn’t see them play at all but I remember the ESPN people saying that they looked horrible. Aren’t they trying to run a new offense this year?

Yes they are running a new offense. I did not watch any preseason games but I read they stunk up the place.

Well, right now both my Packers and Bills are tied for first place in their divisions!

Michael Sam was axed by the Cardinals today.

or the Rams . . .

It wouldn’t surprise me if he clears waivers and they add him to the practice squad though. He had a great pre-season but they are just too deep at his position and the guy he was in competition with for the last spot is more versatile.

Now I’m all sad . . . my favorite guy who was on the bubble for Seattle got cut 8-|

Now doubly sad . . . my team’s opening game is only on the premium sports package BOO!! ~X(

My fave guy got cut, too. :(

collegiate team that is . . .

Why did the Rams draft the guy in the first place if they were deep at Defensive End? And I understand that Sam is not a “two-fer” who could play a second position. This might have been a dollars and sense decision because nominally Sam got beat out by an undrafted rookie, a guy who certainly will make even less money than Sam would have this season.

Sam sold a lot of jerseys.

They drafted him because they thought he could compete for and win a spot on the team and he nearly did. He was good enough - but part of pre-season competition for spots if you have more guys than spots . . . otherwise it isn’t competitive. The Seahawks cut lots of guys who could have made the team and who they would have liked to keep if they had room. They are hoping that some of them end up on their practice squad and are then more available next year when circumstances will be different. The Rams are unexpectedly unsettled at QB now and may have to shift what they do and open a roster spot for another backup QB.

My pet theory is that they guys they release ahead of the deadline are the ones that they aren’t trying to squeak onto the practice squad and the late announcements are the ones who they hope to keep around. We’ll see.

Does anyone know what the official time is today where they can start resigning guys?

Saintfan, I thought it was 4pm yesterday (Saturday) ?

The 53 man roster was 1pm Pacific Time yesterday. Today at some time they can start signing people to their practice squads (10 players). There is an open period where other teams can claim players off waivers in the first round draft order, though.

After much googling I see that it is 1pm Pacific Time today that they can name practice squads

Sam’s best chance and hope is the Rams practice squad. The real only teams that might have used a quick claim were in the NFC East. If a depleted Cowboys team showed no interest, it pegs the value of the player. Without the publicity of non-football related issue, the guy would have been just a no-name average player trying to find a team.

I would hardly call the SEC co-defensive player of the year a no-name average player. He had 11 tackles and 3 sacks in pre-season and proved that he can play at the pro level. The Cowboys are hardly the benchmark for defensive talent evaluation so the fact that they didn’t pick him up says more about Jerry Jones than Michael Sam.

Michael Sam aside, Jerry Jones needs to just get in the owner’s box and turn over the personnel reins to someone who actually knows what they’re doing.

I don’t know squat about football, but I know a lot about PR. Sam was on the bubble and probably would not have been drafted at all but for hiring a PR firm and becoming a cause celeb pre-draft. That is not a secret and it was intentional, btw.

From the Dallas Morning News . . . maybe this will add clarity both for @xiggi and @actingmt‌

Question: Was surprised to see former UT standout DE Jackson Jeffcoat released by Seattle Sunday. Are you hearing any buzz about him from the Cowboys? I’m surprised he’s still unsigned.
Jon Machota: Haven’t heard anything. The Cowboys want to get younger, so adding a player like Jeffcoat seems more likely than a veteran in his 30s. The problem with Jackson is he doesn’t really fit the Cowboys’ scheme. He’s better suited to be a 3-4 outside linebacker. It’s the same reason they didn’t draft Michael Sam in the seventh round.

For the record, both the Rams and the Seahawks know a lot about defense and pass rush so the fact that they gave these players a chance means that they both had some significant football upside to teams that value situational pass rush D. As mid-sized guys they are both specialists and most teams don’t value that enough to clear a roster spot for it. In no way does that mean that the Rams drafted Sam as a publicity stunt or charity project. He does well what they value but the numbers just didn’t work for the 53 man roster.
