Are you shrinking?

My husband found out a couple of days ago that he’s an inch and a half shorter than he used to be.

And my sister told me last night that she has shrunk three-quarters of an inch.

I’m afraid to be measured myself – I’m doing Weight Watchers, and if I’m shorter than I thought I was, that means my goal weight is lower!

We’re all in our fifties. I thought people didn’t shrink until their 60s or 70s.

Are you shrinking?

Remarkably, I’m not shrinking. I’m the same height I’ve been since I was 14 years old. Too bad I’m not the same weight!

Don’t know if my height is shrinking but my feet are growing.

Before I had kids I was a 7 1/2 narrow. After kids, I was a plain old 7 1/2.

But this fall, at the age of 49 I have discovered all of my shoes from last year are too small - painfully so. They’re too tight in the toes. The new shoes I’ve had to purchase are 8s. Apparently my feet are 1/2 size longer than they were last spring.

H had his physical two weeks ago and Dr determined he lost 1 1/2 inches…scheduled him for a bone density test…trying to rule out osteoporosis/disc issues etc…H was so depressed…

technician measured him before the test and he grew an inch from the week before…did the test anyway (waste of time and money)…no problems

moral of the story: maybe the height scale he/she is being measured on is different each Dr visit; according to the tech, they are not particularly accurate…

lafalum: same thing here; 7 1/2 N before kids, 7 1/2 afterwards…now, depends on the shoes, time of year etc…sometimes 7 1/2, sometimes 8…

I had shrunk a little bit. I have degenerative disc problems. But I just had neck surgery where they take the shriveled, herniated, calcified disc out and replace it with bone (many take the bone from the hip, but my bone spurs were so big that they used the remnants to fill the disc space). Maybe I got one disc worth of height back!

You actually shrink about 3/4 inch over the course of each day and then stretch out again at night. You could get differing readings depending upon the time of day that you measure yourself.

I’m .50" - .75" shorter than I used to be, and I am now in my late fifties. I’m not sure exactly when this happened because probably decades have gone by when I never measured my height. I haven’t noticed any difference from morning to evening, but I would imagine most measurements have taken place in the afternoon.

If you do yoga you might actually grow. Yes, that’s right. At age 60 you might go to the doc and find you are taller than ever before. Why? The muscles get strong and the joints release; the tendons and ligaments lengthen and become more supple. I know three ppl who are taller than before yoga. Double takes at the doc’s. Samezies for lung capacity (all that yogic breathing).

Lafalum- Be thankful that you no longer wear a narrow shoe. Most of the shoes available in narrow are UGLY. :)

I’m 54 and still 5’7’’.

Yup I’m 1/2" shorter. I thought it was a fluke the first time earlier this year, but I had my physician’s office measure my height this week when I was in and they concurred with the earlier measurement…I am indeed 1/2" shorter than I was in my twenties. I’m very tall so I don’t mind it, but good golly. I’m in my mid fifties.

It’s the COLD!!! /Seinfeld reference

Funny. I went for an HSA check-up yesterday, and am told I am an inch taller!

Giraffe.

YES. I hadn’t measured myself in years. No problem really. But then my Doc suggested I get out of the obese range. So I calculated my BMI target weight based on my “known” height. I lost twenty pounds and very proud of myself, headed back for a follow-up. The Doc checked my weight and said “I thought we talked about you getting out of the obese range.” It was a sad moment. Three-quarters of an inch really matters when calculating BMI.

We have a pullup machine at the office and part of my stretching routine before running is to grab the handles (I have to go on tiptoes to reach the handles) and just hang from them. Stretches the arms, sockets and the back.

I agree that yoga & other stretching exercises can help you GROW. I think that’s why I haven’t shrunken tho my sister who is only 3 years older has. I’m the same height I reached at age 12–never got any taller (or shorter). I do practice yoga, tho not as much as I ought. :)

NewHope – what your doc said is just all kinds of wrong. You should be really proud of yourself for having lost that 20 pounds, and he should have been happy too even if he encouraged you to lost some more. Geez…

Lafalum my feet also grew during pregnancy and never went back. A whole shoe size! My feet got bigger…and after pregnancy and breast feeding…my boobs shrank. Lovely.

At 5’ 0", I’ve got no room to shrink. And, so far, I haven’t. Plain truth is, I’m working very very hard to prevent it. Weight lifting and all that.

But Starbright, I haven’t been pregnant in 19 years and just this past summer my feet grew 1/2 size in length, from a 7 1/2 to an 8.

I wasn’t surprised that they got wider 20 years ago when I was pregnant (frankly I was relieved, because narrow shoes tend to be both ugly and expensive).

But why are they getting longer, now?

I couldn’t agree more. You did a great job, and your doctor should have acknowledged it, even if you have a little further to go.
