Are your ECs supposed to have some "Theme"??

Are they? Do mine? Are they okay even if they don’t?

Here are mine…
Model UN - pres, co-founder (member 9th at old school…10th-12th)
Debate (10th-12th)
School Newspaper (10th-12th) - Copy Editor this yr, something better next two yrs
NHS (11th-12th) - there will be some tutoring involved
Junior Achievement (11th-12th)
Freshman Yearbook Editor (9th…old school)
Red Cross Volunteer Internship (10th-12th during school yr)
working on gubernatorial campaign for Dannel Malloy (D) from CT
volunteering at hosp last summer (after 9th) (meh…doesn’t really count)
volunteering at Aquarium (summer of 10th, 11th, summer of 11th?, 12th)
uhmmm…one of my poems was published in a book
and I might get an internship at the local newspaper nearby (pretty big newspaper) next summer instead of volunteering at aquarium
…can you tell I like political science/writing/journalism? the Aquarium is sort of just there…

uhm am I set? I pretty much love everything I do…only Model UN is a lil annoying because I have too much responsibility :P

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp (help!)

I love the arctic monkeys!!!

and no, they don’t need to have a common theme.

but they’re solid right? my ECs? combined with A-/A GPA and high SATs, I’ll get into an ivy?

NOTHING is solid. Expect the worst.

…thanks

thanks a bunch

No, he’s right. Your ECs are great, but it’s still quite possible to be rejected.

You’re in tenth grade. Just calm down. Do what you love and don’t stress yourself about “getting into an Ivy.”

I would reccomend trying to get one. For example if you are in debate, join mock trial because it showcases the same skills. Of course the endless science bowl captainships do get old. (Well, at least in my mind-I shouldn’t talk though, I have a ton of science related bowls also.)

I really don’t have time for anymore clubs… And I think I do a lot already.

that’s why I have Model UN (verrry similar to Debate)

summerskster, the sooner I start worrying the better

“I would reccomend trying to get one. For example if you are in debate, join mock trial because it showcases the same skills.”

i actually don’t agree with this for exactly the same reason - it showcases the exact same skills, so it doesn’t really make a difference (although there is SOME difference, as debate can be more current-event oriented) which one you do or if you do both…if it’s between doing one very in-depth and doing two on a more superficial level, i’d just do one.

i don’t think the theme really matters. and don’t stress yourself out worrying. life is more than college admissions and college…

ebonytear, right now its all about college…but yeah, I don’t wanna join something THAT similar…

hmmm I don’t think there’s much else I can do to add to my ECs except win awards in MUN/Debate

your ECs are very solid, what I’d call “high-mortal”. A bit of leadership, a little community service, and mama-mia you have-a spicy meat-a-ball!

Your actual SAT scores and grades will count big time for whatever college you’re applying to and will most certainly define your app. But if those come through solidly, I’d put Cornell as a safety for you.

Yet the top elites are a far reach for almost everyone without something to put them in at least “demigod” status, such as winning national contests (like semis in siemens-westinghouse), publishing a research paper, starting a sucessful program for tutoring disadvantaged intercity youth, being a top ranked athelete for your state, etc.
