Argh...why can't I find pants that look good?

i like Talbots’ Heritage cut - especially in their all-or-mostly cotton twill dress pants with the soft brushed finish.

used to like the G.Vanderbilt jeans. Will have to try again, especially in corduroy. Does anyone know if Kohl’s still carries that brand?

Gloria Vanderbilt Clothing | Kohl's;

Apparently they do carry them at Kohls…but they are less exoensive at Costco.

I also LOVE NYDJ. I have noticed there are many types of bootcut. I am also a pear shape as the OP but I still prefer & feel the most comfortable in a bootcut that is NOT too drastic, meaning a small bootcut rather than a dramatic one. I rarely buy a NYDJ at full price. I belonged to Hautelook on-line last year and bought what turned out to be my favorite pair of jeans: NYDJ @ $40-45. They tend to retail at $104-$120, but I try to find them somewhere for less. I’m no longer a member of Hautelook simply because it was too tempting for me to buy, with deals on my email every day.

I have a pair of summer capris that are Gloria Vanderbilt that I do like. I need to go to Costco, then, to find beautiful cords for the winter! I, too, have found jeans from jjill (not recently) and also Macy’s common brand that I have found very comfortable too. You just have to try several stores and then be patient!

One other thing, I’ve mentioned on a few different threads…I really find Spanx too thick, uncomfortable and riding up my thigh. I found another ‘girdle’ type of garment that is actually lighter weight and therefore easier to wear everyday. It’s called The Body Wrap by Christina America. It stretches to your body shape rather quickly and most days I cannot even remember I have them on.

Good luck to the OP. Unfortunately we all the same issue, whether we’re pears, apples, size 2,4,14, 26, etc. when it comes to finding pants with just the right fit, feel, price, etc.

Lands End has a lot of sales, some with free shipping. If you are tempted to order a style, know that you can do return at Sears.

Our local Sears closed…darn. But here’s a link to check by zip

When you go in these stores and start trying jeans on, try to locate a salesperson and find out what kinds of alterations they might offer. Many stores offer free hemming, and if you find a pair that just needs a little tweak here or there, they may offer it for a very reasonable cost and it would be worth it to get something that really fits you the way you want.

My sil who has a pear shape says she likes Nordstrom because of the free alterations. I’ve never used them so I don’t have any knowledge.

I figured out that I had no black pants. Things are so casual anymore I mostly had jeans and leggings. So I went looking for black pants. They were hard to find a pair of normal black pants I can wear that were sort of dressy. I finally bought a pair at White House Black Market. They are all right, not great but I went quite a few places and these are the best of the lot.

I have to admit I do not like NYDJ. I know tons of people do but they are not for me.

My favorite jeans are the always skinny from Gap. I keep reaching for them. I have a pair of jeggings from Jag that I like. But mostly because they are really stretchy and heavier than leggings and I feel more comfortable in them. I’m pretty self conscious in leggings and am more comfortable in the jeggings or ponte pants. I don’t want to be accused of wearing leggings as pants.

But finding a great pair of pants is really hard these days. I don’t know, are regular pants not popular now?

I’m not a pear and I hate NYDJ. I do have a pair of Eileen Fisher from Nordstrom anniv sale- still not cheap but I think they might be good for pear. I’m petite no waist no butt no tummy. The Eileen Fisher fabric drapes down for me and I think it might be great for a pear very comfortable also.

Oh, and if Nordstroms alters your jeans, you don’t have to go back to pick them up. They will ship them to you for free.

Another who hates NYDJ. I am not a pear though. I am one who is thrilled with a lower waist line. Not butt showing but below the waistline. I find that any pant with a higher waist just doesn’t hang right since I have a rotated sacrum and I need the waist line to fall below the natural waist or it is uncomfortable or the waistlband flaps over and I am constantly putting it back up. My curvy friend likes J Crew and even has had some luck with Target for jeans. My curvier D likes Anthropologie but most have spandex in them.
At Ann Taylor or banana republic make sure you bring a few pairs into the dressing room in all their different fits. Once you know what fit works you can shop their online sales.
One great thing about Nordstroms is you can sign up for an appointment with a personal stylist free of charge. You tell them what you are looking for and it is all ready for you to try on. Consider Kut or Caslon or Halogen. The stylist serve all price points.

Reminder - when you shop for pants, wear the intended companion shoes.

^^^ That’s the other nice thing about Nordstroms. They have all kinds of shoes available in their fitting rooms in all sizes in case you don’t have with you what you’re going to wear with the pants.

@conmama, let us know how you fair at the new stores you visit!!!

I’m another one who goes straight back to the Gap for their 1969 Always Skinny jeans.

I must be odd. I have a pair or two of JCrew jeans/cords but I always have to get a larger size than normal there. So my advice to you was going to be to try on for fit and don’t worry about size. (I remember visiting a JCrew once where the sales lady assisting me in the dressing room kept saying she was wearing a size 8 - if those pants she had on were a size 8 they must have been ready to POP!!! No way!!!)

Our local Nordy has fabulous alterations - I even take non-Nordstrom bought stuff to get altered there.

Here is a couple of brands sold at Nordstrom that make good quality, no nonsense dress trousers: Lafayette and Classiques Entier (Nordy’s own label).

I wear JCrew pants a lot, including cords, and I do NOT find that they run large. I wear my usual size.

I like Madewell jeans (a JCrew company) and find the quality of denim a lot better than Gap.

I was at an even hosted by a law firm last night at Dillard’s. A wardrobe consultant put on a short fashion show using women from the firm of all sizes and shapes. I’ve attended before, and the consultant is REALLY good- and fun. She gave us a lot of helpful tips. One was that straight leg jeans are the “go to” this season. Skinny will NOT be going out of style, but she said to go with straight over boot but. They should gently hug your hips and upper thighs and then start to fall straight. She also showed some nice black pants with a good cut that also fell straight (not real wide). She said leather trim/accents are big this season and really update an outfit.

@Momofwildchild…thanks for sharing that. It was fun to read.

J Crew sizing is all over the map, changing from year to year and definitely across ‘fits’ or styles (Minnie, Pixie, Matchstick, Toothpick, etc). My biggest problem is with the huge # of toothpick cuts. I wear a very small size but have calves that cannot fit in any of the toothpick cuts, and 90% of the pants are now skinny or toothpick at J. Crew. (If I have to peel the pants off inside out to take them off, not a good fit!) I would love to find a straight leg pants that drop straight down instead of tapering narrowly over the calves. Boot cuts have disappeared and do look dated. (I am still wearing them from past years.) J. Crew has eliminated the Matchstick cut so I am in search of another low cut, straight leg, but not tight through the calves.

I was a huge Gap fan until ten or twelve years ago—whenever it was that Gap fired Mickey Drexler and J. Crew picked him up. Gap jeans from a decade ago are still holding up but the materials used more recently are not good.

MOWC – I have noticed leather accents this year and wonder who will be paying for the dry cleaning?

I meant to put “boot cut” not “boot but”. LOL.

I suspect many of the leather accents are not really leather… at least at reasonable price points.

Leather accents have been in and out a few times around. Many items with smaller leather accents can be safely washed. As long as the item is allowed to dry on a towel or drying rack, they do just fine.

Pear here, though the age seems to not be kind to the waist, despite recent weight loss. It came off my backside, not the waist, unlike years ago. Regardless, am still a pear. Sigh. I have tried every brand of jeans that does not excessively break the bank, and some that do. Not a fan of NYDJ. Too much stretch, too much compression.

I like, Land’s End, Bandolino, Macy’s house brand, Calvin Klein, and though they don’t cover very well, unless I wear a long top, Anne Taylor. Those were a Black Friday find, last year. Just found some Lucky Jeans at TJ Max that are a nice fit.

It takes a lot of patience and kindness to yourself. I recently went shopping with one of my girls. We first hit Old Navy. She tried on probably 20 pairs of pants. They all made her look heavy and her legs like sausages. She was frustrated and in tears. We regrouped went a few stores down to Anthropologie. She didn’t want to try anything on. She felt like she had gained weight. Forced the issue and strangely every pair she tried on there looked great Unfortunately for the wallet at a much higher cost. The size 25 in several brands fit her, if we had stopped after old navy she would have given up and felt terrible about her size.
