Arizona State University or University of Maryland-College Park?

Any info. or opinions on either?? Does University of Maryland have a good party scene?

I would say that Maryland is better academically though Arizona State definitely has the better social life and party scene.

HOWEVER, Maryland also has a very good party scene, greek life, football games, bars/house parties are basically the campus life at UMD. There are also many student groups, and tons of activities on campus. In addition, UMD is close to DC which has a great nightlife.

University of Maryland is more than likely to have a nice party scene, though not as well known as Arizona State University. I think both universities have their pluses, such as ASU interesting whether to experience and UM-College Park near Washington D.C. Though UM-College Park campus buildings etc… is not attractive to me at all, meaning campus is not that good.

It’s way too hot in Tempe. And it’s currently 104 degrees where I live.

Not too far off from feeling like your in California, right? The way the ASU landscape etc… is.

Definitely. Too much like home.

I was sick and tired of the dry, superhot heat, so I figured I’d go to Houston to experience some humid heat.

Arizona State is a known party school… so no, Maryland can’t compete there. But they still have a great social scene like every other big state school. I don’t think you will be complaining about UMDs party scene.

And UMD definitely has a better reputation than Arizona State. I see ASU get made fun of all in the times in TV, movies, etc as a party school. The Daily Show just did a segment not too long ago making fun of ASU and its students. You won’t have to deal with that negative stigma if you go to Maryland. Just saying.

UMCP is the school for Duke and Georgetown rejects…

I would go to UMD for the far superior academics and the similar, yet not as well known party scene. Remember the old joke “America’s Safety School” with its 98% acceptance rate and all that.

although Barrett, ASU’s Honors College, is quite good

First hand experience, my sister goes to UMD-CP, the party scene is definitely not lacking although not nearly as known as ASU’s the academics are better at Maryland.

I’ll bet you the party scenes are similar… it’s just that ASU’s has become a cliche.

UMD is a well regarded research university… per the NRC #24 among public universities, whereas Arizona St. is #41 among publics. USNWR has Maryland at #54, and Arizona St. not in the top 100.

I would consider UMD a peer to Texas A&M, just below UCSB, UCI, and UCD, but above UC Santa Cruz.

Weather/geography is another consideration… AZ (Tempe) gets very cold and very hot, as do all desert cities. Arizona St. is a five hour drive from the nearest metropolis. I think the DC/Maryland area is just more culturally rich and interesting.

ASU might be great if you can get into the Honors Program.

University of Maryland would get my vote.

Five hours from Tempe to Phoenix??? Hmmmm…

^

Tempe is like a suburb of Phoenix… more like 5 minutes away from the city.

DunninLA, you do not know what hell you are talking about. Tempe is right next to Phoenix, Scottsdale and like 15 minutes away from sky harbor airport. And except in the summer, Arizona winter is very very awesome. Thats why a lot of people come here after they retire. too Cold? my a-s-s.

Also, asu is getting better and better while maryland is in pretty much dead end. asu is cheaper and closer.asu definitely has better party scene…

honestly it is pretty funny how you suggest “Weather/geography” while you don’t know nothing about arizona…what a joke.

I’d also say UMD unless you get into ASU honors, for the exact reasons already mentioned. (Better academics, good social life, good party scene…)

KYO***,

you are correct, I shouldn’t have said it is too cold in winter… it is fine in winter, it’s just summer that is brutal.

As for metropolis, I wasn’t considering Phoenix to be a metropolis… Oh, I know it is large and heavily populated, but I was using the word more in a cultural sense… NYC, Washington DC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, San Francisco, to some extent LA, Atlanta and Dallas are metropolises. Though Phoenix is technically larger than half of those cities, it doesn’t have the culture of a metropolis.

Thanks for your opinions. I also live in NY so going to Arizona for school would be really far, but that might be a good thing.
