arizona state vs california communicty college

my mom is just realizing how much money out-of-state tuition is at asu so she is now considering a cc…which should I chose?
Would asu even be worth the money? like the social scene and the solid college experience would be but…

here’s my next option:
I won’t have a car but I’ll bike and bus when needed. I plan on applying to Florida State, ucsb, ucsd, ucd, ucb, univ of wash, michigan state, nyu, and univ of texas after I finish…and I’m going to major in public health.

here are the community colleges I’d go to:
Delta College, Stockton, Ca

SBCC-Santa Barbara, Ca

City College San Francisco

what are people’s experiences at these?! thanks!

Cost is relative to what the family can afford. If your parents tell you that they cannot/will not be able to afford out of state (OOS) tuition, then unless you want to take out astronomical loans, you should definitely go to CC. Especially in California where they have TAG, Assist, and other great resources and programs to transfer to a 4-year state university. No social scene will be worth tens of thousands a year on top of what you may be taking out in loans and/or been awarded through grants/scholarships. You should look on ASU’s website and see if you can determine if you will qualify for any institutional merit aid as an OOS with your stats.

Transferring OOS from a CCC will be tricky, but possible. You should keep continuous contact with each school’s transfer admission reps/dept to stay current on any reqs you will need to meet to be accepted.
The UCs you will fare a bit better over by using Assist and any other agreement between each particular UC and your CC like TAG. Most CCC students end up transferring to a UC or CSU, so follow the crowd for those ones and you should be okay as long as you remain a competitive applicant.

The city of Stockton just filed for bankruptcy last week - the biggest municipality in US history to do so. This may seriously affect the resources they allocate to their CC. Nothing will be known for sure until a federal judge decides things for the city. Long term this may not be a good option.

CCSF had an accredation report released just days ago explaining that CCSF will have to be closed in 8 months if it does not significantly improve some serious shortfalls that have been lingering on with it for the last decade. These problems include lack of leadership at all levels, bloated administration, and bad financial accountability even through the most recent down economic times. It’s fairly certain that they will close or have to close a big portion of their campus (they have a bunch of campus “spots/buildings” throughout the city itself) since they were ordered to make preparations for closure ASAP. Unless you want to have to transfer into another CC in 8 months time, you should not go there.

SBCC hasn’t been high in the news for anything aweful lately, so I’m going to assume this will be your best option of the 3 you listed.

Best of luck.

thank you! this was a perfect response

Although, there are many other good CCCs: Diablo Valley College, Diante College, etc.
