WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army returns home for the first time since its Oct. 6 win against Tulane when it hosts Rutgers on Friday night at 8 p.m. in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2. The Black Knights are unbeaten in three appearances at Michie Stadium this season.</p>

<p>Army ended their three-game road stretch with a 30-10 loss at Air Force. Senior P-K Owen Tolson set a school record by averaging 58.2 yards per punt (8 attempts). It was the best punting average in the nation this season among players with at least five kicks in a game. Seven of Tolson’s eight kicks traveled at least 53 yards, including three boots of 64-or-more yards. Tolson’s longest kick of the day, a season-long 67-yard punt, rolled dead at the 1-yard line, one of two kicks downed inside the 20-yard line. Tolson also kicked a 22-yard field goal against the Falcons for his fourth make in his last five attempts.</p>

<p>Rutgers is playing just its third road game of the 2007 season. The Scarlet Knights have split their first two trips away from Piscataway with a 38-14 win at Syracuse and a 38-19 loss at Connecticut last week. While Army has played three straight road games, Friday’s contest marks the first time Rutgers has played on the road in consecutive weeks this season. </p>

<p>The Scarlet Knights are trying to break a mini two-game losing streak. Last week, Rutgers outgained the Huskies 511-396, but the UConn special teams provided a blocked punt for a safety and a 97-yard kickoff return for touchdown. Rutgers’ RB Ray Rice carried 21 times for 116 yards and a touchdown, while QB Mike Tell completed 32-of-52 passes for 343 yards. Jeremy Ito provided the majority of the Scarlet Knights’ scoring with four field goals in five tries.

Cadets’ secret mission: Dressed for success

West Point — A black figure emerges from an inky corner at the top of the mess hall steps. He looks left. Right.</p>

<p>“What’s up, boys?” he says, voice gravelly, barely above a whisper.</p>

<p>With that, others emerge from cold shadows cast by the Gothic stone barracks of the United States Military Academy.</p>

<p>This is early yesterday morning’s rally point. At precisely 0100 hours, a handpicked team of 29 cadets, with the wink-and-a-nod approval of a renegade colonel, assemble for a “secret and dangerous” spirit mission.</p>

<p>Their objective, outlined in classified e-mails, is to “improve” all statues on West Point — by dressing them in black “12th Knight” T-shirts and gold dish-towel “battle rags.”</p>

<p>The Black Knights football team plays the Scarlet Knights from Rutgers tonight at Michie Stadium. The T-shirts and towels are part of a campaign to outfit every human on post in black before kickoff. Bronze or flesh-and-blood, the fans will become the “12th Knight,” the extra player on the field.</p>

<p>Spirit missions like this take place at colleges across the country. Penn State runs “white-outs.” Texas A&M fans “bleed maroon.” Notre Dame students spray-paint helmets gold before every game.</p>

<p>But at West Point, where the Army trains men and women to become the nation’s elite officers, even spirit missions must be executed with a cold efficiency. Every facet of cadet life is strictly managed, and rebellion squashed. After-hours pranks carry great risk: laundry duty, running, even expulsion.</p>

<p>Yesterday’s cadet captain, known only as “Spirit 5,” orders his crew to watch for patrolling military police and to work quickly, safely. This mission “is designed so that discovery or capture of one cell will not compromise the entire plan.”</p>

<p>A van pulls into an alleyway between barracks, the colonel gives the signal and the cadets scatter for their assigned statues. They include Sylvanus Thayer, Class of 1808, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Class of 1915. There are seven in all.</p>

<p>The closest to the rally point, but also the most dangerous, is the giant Gen. George Washington. He is mounted on his steed, atop a two-story block of granite. He rests at the edge of the parade ground, in plain view of the barracks. The cadets have a ladder for this, but someone still will need to scramble up and tape the shirt to his chest. They pick a plebe — a freshman — and he shocks them by scaling the monument in seconds, without the ladder.</p>

<p>By 0200, the black bandits begin to return, double-timing it across The Plain. They scatter a herd of grazing deer. Cold and winded, the three teams confirm execution of their missions. Swiftly, they load the equipment into the colonel’s van, and fade away into the night.</p>

<p>Fortunately, because there was a large contingent of visitors to the swim/dive team, they let them leave at half time, so they could begin the drying out! They also gave them military issue rain gear! He had an absolute blast. He is ready to report this summer! He just has a little issue of getting a nomination, and then he’s all set! I still want him to visit Navy, just so he makes an informed decision. Right now, he is so gung-ho Army! That’s the whole purpose of the visit, right? To sell the candidates on the academy.
Yesterday he had his last interview w/ MOC. In a waiting room of six students he was the ONLY one who had visited any academy. No one was even scheduled for a visit. How do these kids know they want this with no plan to visit? Yes, it was nice that s could go up there on Army’s dime, but if that were not the case, I would have found a way to have him visit so I’d know it was what he truly wanted. Also, I am so glad I sent him alone. As much as I wanted to be there, he could make his decisions without my opinions clouding his view. He has alot to think about over the next few weeks as we wait to hear what the MOC’s decide!</p>

All candidates who have been offered appointments are invited for an overnight visit. These candidates have to pay for their own transportation, so there will be some who cannot afford to do so, but many will.<br>
