What makes a “slam dunk” when you’re limited to what is offered at your school? There’s no way I could be president of more than 2 clubs in addition to being section leader for multiple years and assistant editor-in-chief of the newspaper. What would that leave for anyone else? There are only so many clubs out there. Not enough for everyone to have even at least one leadership position. And then they expect us to throw money into a club’s “national level” politics or something beyond our connections in order to stand out?

Special consideration is given to minorities (via programs such as affirmative action) because of diversity and because they may grow up in less-than-desirable circumstances. But is the thought even passed when someone is trying their damnedest to stand out in a school where the top 100 people have 3.9’s and above (I’m 26th) and everything is so cutthroat just to even make any significant mark?

With a 3.95/4.61 GPA you’d think the combination would be enough to wow someone. Add in at least 20 hours a week at my job and it just seems unreal that I wasn’t selected. And deferment? What does that even mean?

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I am a little bewildered. But I have no regrets really. Given the competitive nature of everyone around me…I can’t think of what else I could have done to beef up my application more than it was. Honestly…my time is taken by everything else in my life. And if UNC couldn’t do the math on a simple number of hours I devote in a week…it’s their loss. I’d love to get that acceptance letter when the next deadline goes by but there’s nothing I can really do to wow the admissions officers further.

I’ve done all I can.
I’m just frustrated.
