Hello, my daughter wants to major in computer animation. What do you think is the better option: an art institute (we’re looking at the Art Institute of Colorado which offers a Bachelors degree in Media Arts & Animation) or a traditional university? Thanks!

My vote goes for traditional college, if the college offers a similar major or the same major/minor in computer animation.

I don’t know what your daughter plans on doing with a degree in computer animation, but she would benefit the most in attending a school in a location where there is a job market for her field. I’m not necessarily sure how strong of a market Colorado has, but you should take that into consideration.

The reason I vote for traditional college is because at a traditional college you will always have the option of exploring non-art/design related majors. College students change their mind once they start college. I know I did when I start art school. Later to end up dropping out beceause I didn’t have alternatives other than art/design related majors. The flexibility or option a traditional university will offer will be the best choice(in my opinion). Look into schools like NYU, Carnegie Mellon, USC. They have strong art/design/media departments.
