Does anyone here have any experience with the Art Institutes, which are for-profit colleges across the US? My kid is interested in pursuing a degree in a photography in an environment w/o tons of academics, and someone suggested he look at the Art Institute of Washington (DC). Kid is actually an honor student currently at a liberal arts uni, but hates it there and has withdrawn.

I have heard nothing but bad things about them. They are out to get your $$. These are not to be confused with the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, which is one of the top rated schools in the country. There are many “stand-alone” art school that have the minimum number of liberal arts courses (if that’s what you mean by academics)… He needs to check into some of those.

What type of art does your kid want to do?

generally, no, no and no. And especially no in terms of return on invesment

Read the article in Good Housekeeping, April 2014. First hand acct of someone who went there and the financial nightmare it became.
