Art Institutes

ANYONE applying to an art institute across the U.S –

I know this is information you can easily look up but I just felt the need to address it. I just went to the AI of Pittsburgh for a tour and it has some extremely sketchy details I feel I should include so no one waste their time there or at any AI.

  1. IT'S NOT EVEN A CAMPUS. It's an office building (speaking for AI of Pittsburgh, but I believe it applies to elsewhere as well.) Their "campus" was located in a 15 story office building with the housing located 3 blocks away.
  2. The lady that showed me around did not care what year I was graduating, she gave me an entire course catalog. I'm a junior in high school. This is new to me. I have seen 3 colleges and none of which laid out an entire plan for me. Maybe that's how they do it, but it was weird.
  3. I managed to talk to some of the students currently enrolled (I was being a little sneaky when I had to use the bathroom, which are really nice by the way.) The two that i spoke to mentioned their professor didn't give 2 shits about them or their work and just was there to supervise. They have roughly 60-90 minutes of free time in classes where the instructor OCCASIONALLY walked around to check on progress and only then did he find something NEGATIVE to say about their work.
  4. And finally, the two girls I talked to said they are on their 5th year at the AI. They both said that when it came time for them to graduate there were additional classes added on to their current ones so they were unable to graduate.

The AI, is a scam. They are for profit, they just want your money. I know I may not be the most credited person, but trust me when I say it was sketchy.

Not all Art Institutes are that way. I’d guess you’d find something very different at Pratt, for instance.

oh i just meant the art institute chain themselves. like art institite of pittsburgh, pheonix, ect.

mollsss - Good for you that you figured this out about the for-profit Art Institute group! Too many students fall into their trap every year.

For ideas on good places to study art, you can check the Visual Arts and Film Majors sub-forum inside the College Majors Forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/

@moliss - Excellent info. Thanks.

Do not go to one of the Art Institute schools. EDMC owns Ai as well as South College and Argosy. EDMC is a financial nightmare. Billions of dollars of debt were “forgiven” by transferring 40% ownership of the schools to the banks. At this time EDMC is only interested in profit margins.
