Hi, I am applying as a STEM major for several T20 universities. Could submitting a mediocre visual arts portfolio hurt my application? I have no formal art experience but have done a few small competitions (nothing that prestigious). Some of my drawings are from school assignemnts or drawings I have done in my free time.
Prevailing thinking is that an art supplement should be at or close to conservatory level for it to be a plus in an application. Why submit anything to admission officers at a top school that is “mediocre” and not required? If anything, it could take time/attention away from stronger aspects of your application. You can show your interest in art without a supplement through the EC and award sections.
We really cannot judge without seeing your art. In my experience an arts supplement includes a portfolio, resume related to art, and letters of recommendation related to the art, but my experience is in music. Some schools are encouraging submission of art, videos, poetry, anything that expands their knowledge of who you are. If you have won some competitions, are they listed on the application? Do you plan on continuing art in any way?
Again I am nervous saying yes or no to your submission because while you say you are mediocre, we don’t know that!
