My son is a visual artist and seeking education to build a career. However, traditional art education has tremendous problems. He is a digital artist but loves making with his hands. He was raised in art and struggles to care about the post-modern conceptualism that’s fundamental in almost every art school.
He is not enrolled at the moment (he withdrew from SAIC because the program was so focused on what he cares nothing about). But, he was accepted at our local art school (good reputation).
So. I have been in film/video writing, directing and production for 25 years making national advertising (among many other things). He and I have started a documentary about a well known international artist friend of ours. We’ve hit a really sweet idea but It will take a year and involve considerable hard work.
THE THEORY: Would an art school be willing to accept him part time so he takes a class and uses this major project as independent study?
Based on what happens with all that, then he could decide whether to go to school full time or take the work he’s done a pursue editor/DP jobs directly.
Any ideas about how should he/we/I go about approaching a school to make this happen?
