Here is an article I found about how much allowance money kids are given: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/StockInvestingTrading/Allowancebreakdown_article.aspx

I found it amazing that a kid who is 15 gets $80 per week and a kid who is 16 gets $120 per week.

Do you think this is to much to give to kids?

I got $10 per week when I was younger. I couldn’t imagaine getting that much money. I personally think that it is good. When you are taught about money at a younger age, I think you will be more responsible as adults. I think that if kids didn’t get much when they were younger, they will quickly spend their first “big” money that they make when they are older.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I didnt get an allowance at all when I was younger.

I got birthday presents, christmas presents, and if I wanted something not at one of those times, I asked and if they thought it was reasonable, than they would decide what work was reasonable for me to get it.

To this day, I still save better and know the value of money better than most of my peers, because they taught me the right way to save what little money I had for the important things.

When I was younger before I started working I got $40 a month, $20 was for spending and the other $20 had to go into the bank

That is ridiculus…I got $5 a week when growing up, which I spent mostly on snacks and things like that. If I wanted a toy or something bigger from the store, my parents would decide how long I should wait and what work I would do for it.

And when I was 16 the allowance quit because I started working and making my own money! $120 a week is unbelievable!

My sons get $4 a week for each year in age. I read that somehwere when we were deciding how much to give them. They are expected to put some of it in their college savings, which will be used for their spending money. The 14 yeard old get $56 a month and the 18 year old gets $72 a month. We’ve told the older one once he goes to college there will be no more allowance.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I got $5 a week when I was 15 and I had to load the dishes, wash the ones that don’t fit into the dishwasher, clean and vacuum the living room, clean one of our bathrooms, feed the cats and clean and empty their litter box/living area, clean and vacuum my room, and fold towels. If I wanted something, I saved my allowance. I stopped getting an allowance when I started my after school job because I wasn’t able to do chores anymore. I save so much better than my classmates - a lot of them only have a couple hundred dollars in the bank.

My dad has been talking about sending me money in college, which I found weird, since I haven’t got any allowance money in my life. The only money my parents ever gave me was money for lunch.

I guess not getting an allowance is why I am so fiscally conservative, and know how to save, and don’t waste my money.
