How does this guy not mention “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?” Everything from the joy of labor to The Committee on Social Thought reeks of it.

There is another thread discussing this article: “The case for working with your hands” in the Parents Forum.

I liked the article. :)

I live in Richmond and am tempted to contact him. haha maybe I’m just weird

Working with your hands for $40/year (he said he actually makes about $20/hour!) with no benefits?

yea, great choice.

Of course the real story is surely a bit more nuanced - you don’t get such an article placed in the NYT without (1) a good agent and (2) a good deal if writing work on the side.

My guess is that his motorcycle “business” is more of a cover story for his real career of writer. Heck, PhD turned mechanic will look great on the book jacket. Sure sounds better than former lobbyist.

Kind of cynical, aren’t we, newmassdad? :)

cynical? Maybe. But I sure know a handler when I see one.

Look at it this way, J’aboude. How hard was it for you to get your last article published in the NYT Magazine?

This guy is either a lost soul (just read the string of jobs/careers he describes in the article) or a rising author. I know what I’d bet on…

I do work with my hands, and as a profession it did sort of fall in my lap, but I’ve never gotten past my home’s Lunchtime Gazette (also known as the Refrigerator Magnet Times and Review). I liked the article, but then again, I liked Harry Potter too. Anyways, it’s a lot better than the one with the guy that couldn’t talk to his plumber.
