Arts supplement + home of the best fine arts program in the world = hook?

So Yale is pretty much the Wharton of art. Do you think this means my art supplement will get more weight? I’m probably pretty good for a h.s. senior but I’m not majoring in fine arts or anything (more like econ/psych). I already uploaded my stuff to Yale, but I’m just curious.

(incidentally, Penn, another school with a great fine arts program, didn’t care for mine. Haha :()

A lot of people are going to start the technical rambling on what a hook is exactly, so I’ll spare you the unhelpful posts…

I applied EA for 2014, and I know for a fact that Yale reviewed and liked my art supplement. Art was kind of my “hook”–scare quotes intentional-- but I was deferred. Maybe it wasn’t good enough, or maybe my stats were a bit too low to be accepted EA, or maybe it’s because Yale pretty much maxed out on EA kids at my school… I don’t know. But I do know that, generally, art itself isn’t going to get you in. Also, schools like Yale and Penn have way too many supplementary materials for them to review each one, so it’s possible that Penn didn’t even view yours.

Hmm, did they call you or something to say they liked it?

My art is the only thing that really distinguishes me from any other Asian student with nice test scores. It would have been nice if it was a real hook instead of a quarter of one, haha.

It’s probably my fault with Penn, I didn’t see any mention of arts supplements on their website so I assumed they would look at my Common App supplement. They probably didn’t. I’m hoping for better luck with Yale if they looked at yours. :]

Pastel how did u find out? I was deferred too with my Drama that I thought was a “hook”

I think a lot of people have something that they are greatly passionate about and think that’s a “hook.” I might be getting the terminology wrong but I think it’s only a “hook” really if it’s something that would help them overlook average test scores. So if you’re a famous international artist and are making a lot of money from your art then I’d say that’s a hook. Because it actually makes you stand out. But just being great at art and being passionate about it - do you think you’re going to be the ONLY one about 20something THOUSAND applicants who are great at art? You know what I mean?

I hope I’m not doing the “technical rambling on what a hook is exactly” as Pastel said, but I just don’t want people to be thinking they’ve got a hook and are almsot certainly getting accepted because it’s just not that simple.

I’m also inclined to think that the term “hook” is something that the crazy obsessive CCers have invented and it’s not something the admissions officers really think about  (but that’s just speculation on my part)

Haha, I applied to Yale early, stating that I was passionate about a particular style of music that I had been doing for 4 years with some pretty big awards and performances. Yale was the only school that offered instruction in said music and I had worked with a Yale professor who wrote to the adcoms. I also had a small legacy (mom went to grad school). I was deferred. Ultimately, it doesn’t make a difference in the early round. Maybe it will in regular?
