artschools

I also have a post on WetCanvas student dorm ( interested in art schools which to pick, also same name), but I noticed that there’s way more people responding to questions here.I am interested in going to art school, the ones I really wanna get into are RISD and ArtCenter, second are MICA,MCA,CIA,SCAD,and SAIC. I am going to major in illustration. What schools offer the best internships? What if I only get into SAIC, MICA,MCA ,SCAD and CIA ? Which school sets itself apart from the rest? What qualties should I be looking for?

Are there any good illustration programs in the CSU system ? i heard that CSULB is good, but what about CSUF or SDSU( in case I don’t get into art school ).

//What schools offer the best internships?//

You can review employment and internship opportunities posted for SCAD here. It doesn’t mean you cannot pursue opportunities on your own. I think most students probably do.

RainingAgain has a SCAD fetish. Your question is about California State Universities. A number of them have very decent art programs, but generally UCLA is most notable. I don’t know about the others.

If money is the issue that you are looking at CSA, you might want to considered Mass Art. It is a part of the Mass state university system and has very low out of state tuition.

FYI, I was responding to this bit:

//" am interested in going to art school, the ones I really wanna get into are RISD and ArtCenter, second are MICA,MCA,CIA,SCAD,and SAIC. I am going to major in illustration. What schools offer the best internships? What if I only get into SAIC, MICA,MCA ,SCAD and CIA ?" wrote caligirlartist

I see SCAD in there twice.

SCAD is there twice because I am going to apply there but if I don’t get into RISD or ArtCenter but do get into the other schools(including SCAD), what one should I pick from that group? Taxguy, what is CSA?

//but if I don’t get into RISD or ArtCenter but do get into the other schools(including SCAD), what one should I pick from that group?//

You should pick the college that most impresses you and that you would feel most comfortable attending, geographically, financially, etc. As an astute poster has indicated a few times on this site, you are the driving force behind your education. The greatest faculty or facilities in the world are useless unless you apply yourself to your craft. Your portfolio will open doors for you in the end. The name of a school will help with establishing contacts through alumni associations, etc, but still it is the effort you put into your portfolio that will determine your future. Invest in yourself, and pick the school that offers you the best opportunity to do just that. It’s a personal decision. Visiting the schools is the best thing to do. Spending the money on a trip to ensure the next $80 to $100 thousand is wisely spent is a good idea.

CSA should have said CSU. Sorry for typo

Another school that has a good illustration program (as reported by a nephew of mine who is studying illustration there) is Parsons. It’s going to be easier to get into than RISD or MICA. A couple more to consider that haven’t been mentioned yet are Pratt, California College of the Arts, Otis, and Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI).

I always heard good things about the program at Otis.

Is Monserrat College of Art a good school for illustration? I just don’t want to pick the most known schools in case I don’t get into them. Is Parson’s safe( how far are dorms from campus, is it like Pratt where there’s 7 kids to 1 dormroom and dorms are like 4 blocks from campus)? I don’t like the idea of being in Brooklyn by myself( where Pratt is located). I’ll look into KCAI ( ILL program, dorms, companies that come and review portfolio , companies that hire grads, job placement rate).

We did see some dorms at Pratt and NONE of them were 4 blocks from campus. However, I didn’t see every dorm. Most were right across the street or on campus. Thus, I don’t know what you are talking about.

For Parsons, there are dorms near the studios, but housing is expensive and so students often forage for cheaper quarters. Is the area safe? It’s as safe as living in Greenwich Village can be. You’re smack in the middle of urban life. So you get used to it, enjoy it.

BTW/ Taxguy, KCAI claims to have the only new media program exclusively for undergrads (though of course this is because it doesn’t offer an MFA!). Anyway, you might want to check out this link, though I know you’re looking mainly in the east. http://kcai.edu/academicsandfaculty/academicprograms/photoandnewmedia/index.html

I ordered info and catalog from Parsons( the new school) and will look into KCAI,don’t know if I want to apply to CIA or MICA now.Don’t wanna apply to too many schools.

Actually I did see the program listed for KCAI.Calgirl should also seriously look at MICA since it has a very strong fine arts reputation.

There also is an interesting program by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute It is an electronic arts program. Do you know anything about it?

I’ll think about MICA when I get their catalog(hopefully in two weeks) and maybe order stuff from KCAI.Never heard about Rensslaer Polytech Institute, where is it?

RPI is in Troy NY. It is a very technical school of the caliber of MIT. It may be too techie a program for your interests. They only have electronic arts, which is a form of new media combination of art and music and web design.

Yeah, I’m not that into computers but thanks anyway, taxguy.Cool at Parson’s( all this time I didn’t know New school was Parsons, that school is featured a lot on law and Order:SVU) I can do animation and illustration.Anybody know what companies hire their grads? Do they give a lot of fin aid or scholarships/help with outside scholarships? the student work looks really good.

Caligirlartist, when you graduate in an applied art often it’s not a question of “which companies” hire grads. Many, perhaps most, graduates from design programs (my daughter is one example) find work with small “firms” or working as freelance designers. I would say that many in effect “forage” for jobs that allow them to use and develop their skills. Parsons grads, like those from Pratt and other good schools, are competitive on the market because they have good skills. But it’s very much an individual matter what kinds of work (and how much work) they are going to get; it depends on their own skills, portfolio, energy, connections, and luck, more than just on the school one graduates from.

Mackinaw, what you say may be true, but wouldn’t a quality name such as RISD in design and FIT for fashion et al. would open more doors than going to a lesser known art program? True, once you get the door open, it depends on your portfolio, personality and luck and drive.
