I get 3.9 unweighted gpa and 110 TOEFL, decent activities and honor. I think 1470 will have a negative effect on my application since the other part of my application seems better. All the student around me only turn score above 1500 to those top LACs. The median SAT for Wesleyan is 1480 this year I think, but 1470 is just 10 points lower, should I submit it?
The prevailing thought is that international students should submit scores as it might be tougher to judge your high school’s curriculum and grades compared to a U.S. high school. A 1470 is a very good score and my opinion is to submit it.
Yes
Wesleyan’s most recent CDS reports a middle-range SAT profile of 1300 to 1500, with 71% of attending students having submitted SAT or ACT results. Submitting a score of 1470 would be a good idea for this school.
I noticed that too. And it showed a lot higher % submitted.
I thought it was too low. They have a class of 28 profile. I looked there and it’s very different.
Not sure why the two are so different.
The class profile probably provides slightly more nuanced information for admissions purposes: Class Profile, Admission & Aid - Wesleyan University
The CDS seems* to include all scores from enrolled students, even those from students who didn’t submit them for admission; my TO Wes student had to submit scores before enrolling.
The 2028 class profile shows scores for admitted students, which are much higher (with only 59% submitting). It also shows data for enrolled students on the bottom half of the page, but I suspect that does not include the scores from TO students. Not sure why! But the transparency about admitted student data is nice.
That said, I agree that this student should submit their 1470.
*No one has been able to confirm this; this is just my guess based on the discrepancy (which is also attributable to enrolled vs. admitted) and the requirement that TO students submit scores before enrolling. The current CDS is for the Class of 2027, but a similar discrepancy existed with that class’s profile page when it was up.
This question came up before and the consensus view was what you noted - the CDS includes all scores while the profile only considers scores that were submitted for consideration during admission.
Also, interestingly Wesleyan notes in their FAQ that if you are below the 25% percentile that they are unlikely to make you a more competitive applicant. I don’t think that means don’t submit, but it’s interesting to see the language they use here:
“If your scores fall below the 25th percentile of those Wesleyan typically admits (see class profile), your scores are unlikely to make you a more competitive applicant to Wesleyan.”
All this to say that I would probably recommend submitting the 1470, but others could disagree and they could also be right.
Only issue I’d have with this if true is that the CD shows a 71% submittal rate. I’d assume it to be near 100% but maybe I’m missing something.
The actual rate per the profile was 59% counted.
Personally I think the CDS should match reality. Showing someone a 1300 is not helpful to an applicant.
And
Nonetheless, of the two sources of information posted in this topic, the CDS comes much closer to matching the actual profile for attending students at Wesleyan.
Attending but doesn’t give proper info as to whether one should go TO. Or rather, it gives info that if used that could enhance the chance of a rejection.
Please take the back and forth to PM. Thank you!
This is interesting in that it suggests that Wesleyan itself regards information for accepted applicants as more determinative of an applicant’s chances of admission than that for attending students. Interpreted literally, and using current information, Wesleyan appears to be saying that any SAT result below 1480 would not be helpful to an applicant’s chances.
