So I’m a junior in high school and really want to get into Cornell for engineering. I was thinking about ways to boost my transcript, and I thought joining SciOly might be a good idea. My school is notorious for being amazing at SciOly.

My only concern is that the people that look at my application may just think that I’m trying to pad my resume by joining SciOly. Is it obvious that I’m doing that if I join during second semester of junior year? Will it not help me at all if I do it?

Thanks!

Hi there!

I think you should still join, SciOly is an awesome science-y pursuit. I also joined as a junior, albeit during the very beginning of the school year. But since regionals/invitationals haven’t started yet (at least not in my state), I don’t think it would be too late provided that you can still try out and everything.

If you do well and medal at regionals/state (or nationals if your team is a powerhouse–but those teams probably have filled their spots up) then that would be a pretty cool thing to add to your list of EC’s, although don’t expect it to make or break your app.

You’ll have a lot of fun! Everyone on the team is usually crazy smart–last year every single one of our seniors got into top 10 schools.

Best of luck!

If your school is notorious for being good, then the spots are probably filled up already.
