RANK: 65/581
APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID: Yes

AP tests:
US history 5
Biology 5

My grades has been improving throughout high school. I was rank 120 my sophomore year. I am also a IB diploma candidate. Our school has one of the best IB programs available.

Clubs:
DECA (competed at the state level)
Mu Alpha Theta (math honor club)

Volunteering: (my passion)
Camp CAMP- 100 hours as counselor for mentally/ physically disabled children
Habitat for Humanity- 50 hours helping underprivileged family have homes
Freshman Counselor: I was a counselor for incoming freshman.

Research:
Waksman Student Scholar Program: A high school student research program conducted by Rutgers State University of New York. I isolated and sequenced a fragment of DNA from the never before sequenced plant Wolffia arrhiza. After sequencing, I did DNA and protein analysis on my cDNA strand. This will be published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information. (3 hours a week, entire senior year)

Intel Science Fair- This began in September of 2009 and is a work in progress. My science fair project is to determine the supposed antibacterial effects of ginger on e-coli as a model organism. I am also testing the longevity of the effects. Approximately 3 hours a week is dedicated to this project. I came to this idea for my project through the knowledge that antibiotic resistance is an every-growing problem and my knowledge that ginger has been used for centuries in China as an anti-inflammatory agent. I put these together and came up with my research idea.

International Baccalaureate Group 4 Project- This was during my junior year. I was a member in an interdisciplinary group of IB students who were taking IB biology, IB chemistry or IB physics. Total time spent on this project is estimated at around 25 hours. The group had to come up with a valid research question that had to do with the topic “paper” and one that had chemical, biological and physical aspects to it.

Travels
China: I spent the majority of my summer of 2008 and 2009 in China visiting my grandparents who I had not seen since my immigration in 1999. The first time was mainly to reconnect with my relatives. The second time I was able to visit some colleges in China including the Fudan University of Shanghai and Xi’an Jiaotong University in which I was able to visit each university’s library and experience “college life” in China.

Applying to
Brown
Rice
Yale
Harvard
Washington University at st Louis
Stanford
University of Southern California
University of Texas at Austin
Texas AM (safety) (i already got accepted actually lol)

Your GPA and class rank are pretty dismal…
And your clubs are few, but that’s ok.

While your GPA and rank could really hurt you, your obvious diligence in your research is a huge plus. Your SAT is really good but not good enough to really help you in the area of Class rank.

I don’t want to put you down but that class rank is really scary, but your essay and passion in your research could really help you.

I would say,
Yale - MAJOR REACH
Harvard - MAJOR REACH
Stanford MAJOR REACH

Rice - LOW REACH
UWashSTL - LOW REACH

University of Southern California - MATCH
University of Texas at Austin - MATCH

Texas AM - SAFETY, obviously… haha very good school too! But i would suggest you go to UT if you get in instead, if not your higher choices.

Definitely apply to all of them, but those three at the top might really be turned off at the fact that you aren’t in like, the top 20 at least. I hope I didn’t seem mean :frowning: We have pretty similar interests in colleges haha.

thx for the response, anyone else?

bumppppp 10 char. will chance back!

bummppppp?

Brown- Reach

Can you chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/835117-need-chances-thank-you.html</a></p>

Ouch…that rank is, to be kind, not good. Your SATs are somewhat weak for the Ivies, but pretty good overall. If you have a few leadership roles, try to bring them up. The competitiveness of your school might also make adcoms take a second look (or, conversely, they’ll compare you to your classmates :frowning: ).

But you’ve counterbalanced that through your ECs, so I think that it’ll make the schools take a second look at you, at the very least. The very fact that you’ve improved a lot over a short period of time reveals that you have a lot of drive and the ability to improve. Your Intel project shows your ability to relate your personal knowledge (about ginger) to real-world problems. The volunteering you’ve done is impressive, and hopefully, your volunteering experiences will shine in your application. However, if I must be frank, it’ll be a stretch to get into any of the Ivies you have on your list. Pray that the adcom has a good day when going through your application materials.

Now, after that (especially cruel) assesment, here’s what I think on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being most likely in:

Brown: 3.5
Rice: 6.5
Yale: 2.5
Harvard: 2.5
Washington University at St Louis: 7
Stanford: 3.5
University of Southern California: 6.5
University of Texas at Austin: 9.5

I don’t know if you’ll be burning with indignation after reading this, but if you aren’t (or even if you are), please chance back!!

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

[Chance a scatterbrained, worried fool for schools with traditionally low admissions rates…](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/827713-chance-aa-female-georgetown-american-howard-hamptons-uchicago-others.html)
