As adults, what do you guys feel the best major for someone who wants to be...?

…,to put it broadly, a creative content creator? I want to actually learn how to DO in college, rather than just have a piece of paper that maybe kinda makes me somewhat employable.

It may depend on the type of content.

For example, if you want to write computer games, you can major in computer science.

Of course, any major can be supplemented with appropriate out-of-major courses.

Artist? Or Design (technology)

Audio production? Video production?

Graphic designer?

Many people with content creation jobs these days have a strong writing background. While it is a rapidly changing field and who knows where it will be in four years from this year’s college incoming freshman, right now many have a background in PR and/or communications or journalism or broadcasting. So, doesn’t necessarily have a specific BA major attached. Write. Write. Write and write some more for every vehicle is my advice. Get involved in communication channels at the college, volunteer at the admissions office to create content for their website, or twitter or youtube or FB. Having a basic understanding of social media tools and web-based content management systems and analytics will help. While it’s not directly related to “old school” thinking about video vs. print, many currently involved in content creation and management have those types of backgrounds that cross traditional media lines and have picked up the tools and analytics on the fly as their traditional communication jobs have morphed. So perhaps someone who used to be involved in video or design, has become comfortable writing, or someone who wrote for living becoming comfortable dealing with video, design and images. It’s what I do for a living these days so PM if you like and this is what you are asking about.

It’s really a new frontier career and my Linkedin profiles gets a ton of hits from all over so if this is something you really want to do, I say go for it.
