<pre><code>When Anthony Romero '87 speaks, there is a quiet purpose in his voice.
Whether the issue is gay rights or the powers of the executive branch, as executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, America’s questions concerning civil liberties are under Romero’s purview.
Romero’s drive to help others began with a helping hand from Princeton. As the first member of his family to go to college, Romero was a product of an aggressive outreach program by the University. “I’m definitely one of Princeton’s affirmative action babies, and I’m proud of it,” Romero said.
On campus, he became particularly close with his roommates and counts his freshman-year friends who range from a prep school graduate from Baltimore to a Sikh from Calcutta to a woman from Bangladesh among his closest today. As a young man who had never met a non-Christian, Princeton introduced him to a much wider world and experiences that now assist him in his daily work.
