Asbestos in Ellicott Hall

I just received my housing information for the Fall 2014 semester, and I noticed this near the bottom of the page:

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
ASBESTOS
Floor tile: Throughout, nearly all spaces
Pipe Insulation: Some rooms, many but not all pipes
Additional Asbestos Information

Isn’t asbestos KNOWN to be cancerous, due to fibers in the air which end up building up on the lining of your lungs if inhaled? Is this really safe for me or any other students to be living with? And how many dorms have this issue? Seems pretty unsafe to me. What do you all think?

I am still alive 28 years later. But I am sure Ellicott isn’t the exception.

So here’s the deal… I know it stinks to see that asbestos warning. Ellicott is definitely not alone in having asbestos. By law they are required to tell you that there is asbestos in the building. However, they have taken the necessary steps to protect all the people in the buildings. I don’t believe there is any danger to you by living there. My daughter was in Hagerstown last year and there is asbestos there as well. These are old buildings and it isn’t uncommon for asbestos to be present. The university has done what is needed to ensure that everyone is safe that resides in these buildings. Most of it has been removed or covered in a way that prevents it from being an issue. No matter how little is left in the building they are required by law to tell you of its presence. I completely understand that this isn’t what you want to see when given your room assignment, but I honestly don’t believe there is any danger to you. If I thought otherwise I would not have allowed my daughter to live in Hagerstown last year. If you have any concerns I urge you to talk to Department of Resident Life. They can be reached at 301-314-2100.

all old buildings pretty much have asbestos, unless you’re gonna be crumbling up old building materials and inhaling them I’m sure you’ll be fine
