ASEs other than the "typical" ones.

<p>So I’m currently taking a year off of MIT and taking classes elsewhere, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to really take anything that will transfer back to MIT. However, I’ve been self studying some subjects through OCW and I feel pretty confident in the material.
Do some departments offer ASEs or other types of exams for subjects aside from the standard GIRs? I want to make sure this year off doesn’t set me too far back.
In particular I’m wondering about 5.12, 5.60, and maybe 6.00</p>

<p>In theory, you could take an ASE for any class that MIT offers, but it is up to the department which ASEs they choose to offer. There’s certainly no harm in contacting the departments, though.</p>

<p>^ What Mollie said. Keep in mind, though, that any grade you get on an ASE will show up on your transcript if you are no longer a freshman. Since classes like 5.12 are notoriously hard, you may just want to use the self-study to breeze through the class rather than get a D on your transcript.</p>
