<p>I wondered whether to put this in International Students, but I figured it wasn’t purely an international thing. Basically, I’m from Singapore (female) and I’m applying to NYU, Texas at Austin and USC. Obviously all these schools have high Asian representation, you might even go further and say they have pretty high Singaporean representation, all things considered.</p>
<p>On the other hand, I’m applying as a film major (to NYU Tisch, USC School of Cinematic Arts, and for Texas I indicated Radio-TV-Film as my first choice major - theatre as my second), and I suspect that Singaporeans (not sure about Asians in general) aren’t well-represented in that major. Film - especially at the undergraduate level (some prominent local filmmakers have gone on to grad school in film in the US, but undergrad abroad?) - is just not a Singaporean thing.</p>
<p>Would this affect my chances in any way? I’m more curious than anything, and I’m aware the admissions committees won’t take in a distinctly underqualified student no matter the mitigating factors. However, it would be nice to know that being Asian, for once, won’t count against me.</p>

We need Asian film makers because too many hollywood films have the story where the Asian guy never gets the girl and the white guy always ends up with the Asian chick. I hope you become one of the top producers of movies in the country! Best of luck to you from a Chinese/Taiwanese American dude!! It is definitely something new and you probably have a very good chance of getting into any of those schools.</p>
<p>lol. It’s more like Asians guys never had major roles (except for Jackie and Jet). What most Asians guys do are-get killed and say a few cuss words in Chinese !! You have my support too! I hope you can change this haha. I wanna see some scenes with Asian guys and white chicks…!</p>
<p>Yeah but Jackie and Jet never get the girl either. Plus they aren’t Asian American. They are “foreign” actors. Bruce Lee never really got the girl either. Oh wait. Jackie got that smokin hot latina in rush hour didn’t he?</p>
<p>Thanks for the replies - and Ealgian, that makes sense. However, for, say, NYU - I reckon I’d actually have a better chance if I applied as undecided CAS than as a Tisch film major, based on my grades (although there are no guarantees, I know). The reason I’m applying as a film major is - I actually intend to do it, and I took a year off to gain some filmmaking experience. NYU also requires an artistic review that includes a portfolio, so I think my commitment to that major would be pretty clear.</p>
<p>If you say you are doing Film, and they see you have committed a lot of time to it, they will definitely believe you and understand a little more about you, which is always good. Good luck on NYU.</p>
