Asian Studies at George Washington

Does anyone have experience with Asian Studies at GW? The curriculum for an Asian Studies minor looks very good (especially for Korean language and culture) but what would be the major? Are there relevant interning opportunities?

I’ve taken Asian studies classes and liked them. They were interesting.

You could intern at an Asian embassy. Or perhaps the Smithsonian museums Asian museum. Or study abroad in Asia. Or work at some Asian-related special interest group.

Learn Chinese… fluently. That’s a useful skill to have if you want to go into IAFF.

Look at the top languages most spoken in the world. Pick one. Become fluent.

I will say that IAFF and Asian Studies majors don’t necessarily make it easy to get a job in the real world. It’s not a law degree or an engineering degree, both of which are in much greater demand (and pay more, to boot!).

Economics would be slightly more useful in the workplace with a better starting salary.

IAFF could mean doing humanitarian aid, civil service jobs, charity work, embassy work, United Nations work, working in Asian, teaching English in China/Japan/wherever, etc.

Or, you could get an MA and Ph.D. and try to get a job teaching IAFF (or PSC, or similar) later on.

Or, you could later attend law school and do something Asian-y.

here’s info about the major:

dc is probably the best place in the western hemisphere to find asian studies internships, by virtue of being dc (though i would imagine new york city, san fran, and a few other places would be good too).
