Asians & Duke University

I don’t know where to find the answer or information for this question. But I was wondering, do a lot of Asians from New England (Massachusetts) apply to Duke University? Would an Asian have somewhat of a better chance of getting into Duke because they’re from Massachusetts? Most of my classmates, especially the Asians, are applying to schools in New England and would never imagine going to college somewhere in ??? North Carolina ???

22% of it’s first years from the class of 2012 are asian, 2nd only to caucasians. You are not going up against minimal competition. The east coast is insanely competitive (for highschool and college), best of luck.

Instead of looking at the competition between asian. It would be a lot better to polish your application and make yourself competitive

Wrong. It’s clearly time to eliminate the competition. Go to California for a week, set off a nuke in Boston in the mean time. Improves your chances by 10% guaranteed!

I know an Asian girl who’s going to Duke. She had a 4.0, was nationally ranked in a sport and was the leader of a major club. I live on the other side of the country, though. Good luck to you!

Wow some people can be very unnecessarily sarcastic here.
There seems to be an influx of Asian there, is that a problem?
A better chance just because you’re from MA? You can’t be serious about
this question, are you? No, state location does not matter…well I would think
they would admit more in-state.
Also, who cares where your friends apply?

I’m an Asian dude from MA that got off the Duke waitlist… chose Hopkins instead tho…

Duke is a good school. Do not worry about Asians and competition. Focus on what is urgent and important and you will find success.

location and ethnicity are somewhat considered for top private schools (could be “unfortunately” or “fortunately,” however you want to look at it). but to answer your question, yes, they probably do. when i went for admit day, there was a good chunk of asians. around a quarter of duke’s student pop is asian, so yeah  but this will neither break you or make you. i’m asian, from effing california (asian CENTRAL), and i got in…

and strawberrymilk, no duke would not simply just admit more in-state. it’s a private school. 85% of duke is OOS.

I believe that Duke is required to accept some percentage of instate students because of stipulations from the founder.

Asians on the east coast are pretty serious about all the Ivies.

lol and thats the reason many dont make it

strawberrymilk: while I agree that you shouldn’t necessarily choose what college you go to based on your friends, I can’t help but think it would be awesome to go to ND where two of my best friends will be next year.

Really, apply to the school you like. Don’t game the system and risk ending up miserable for 4 years.

Wow, chancing an asian based on state? I don’t even think the admissions people could give you information that specific…

Lol this is a hilarious thread.
In the simplest words: you won’t know unless you try right?
Another thing, where you are from makes little different, what ethnicity, also makes little difference, if you didn’t know Asians will compete anywhere at top schools, just because Duke to the outside world has a stereotype for Caucasians doesn’t mean it is any easier for Asians to get in. Being Asian I would like to say that Asians aren’t always the smartest people in the world, there are simply more fortune 500 company CEO that are not Asian than Asian. =) (don’t get me started on the bad CEO and the jokes about Harvard MBAs and their bankrupt companies :stuck_out_tongue: )

Nope, a full 27% of the class is Asian. So, yeah, there are a LOT of Asians would imagine going to school in North Carolina contrary to your beliefs. Duke isn’t “southern” in culture anyways; it’s a northern bubble that just happens to have nicer weather with southerners off campus (which is why our “friends” at UNC deride us by sometimes calling Duke the University of New Jersey at Durham).

No, it’s not harder to get into Duke as an Asian from MA; it makes no difference what state you are from in most cases unless it’s NC (James B Duke said that the Duke was to serve the people of the Carolinas (thus, SC might even get a slight boost) although he didn’t specify an exact percentage; but applicants from NC enjoy a higher acceptance rate (above 30%) and do get a bit of a boost even though it’s a private school) or a seriously underrepresented state (ND, WY, MT, etc.). Everything else is roughly equal.
