so how many people know or are one of those asians who doesn’t just focus everything on math, music, and academic competitions, etc.? what about those asians who play a sport - football or basketball, very competitive in debate/forensics, going to nationals every year for FBLA, has a job, focuses more on writing than math, has gotten published before and won writing awards, etc. do you think these asians stand out from the crowd?

i’m indian, have done debate for last 4 years, going to nat’ls this year. i also did odyssey of the mind for 2 years, went to worlds both times.

i stood out enuf to get into my top choice :D

and i was published for an experimental study on link b/t teenage smoking and cancer progression.

I dont play piano…

Why play the piano when I can design a robot that does it better.

Yes! I am a failure as an Asian child. I don’t play any musical instruments, suck at math, and can’t read/write Chinese though I can speak and understand basic conversational Chinese. I am, however, quite competitive in collegiate forensics - have won state/national community college debate awards.

I don’t think “these asians” stand out from the crowd any more than other Asians. I think all that matters is that you do what you enjoy - and if it’s math or piano, then do that…I know some “typical” Asians who have done incredibly well for themselves.

what makes debate and FBLA not typically Asian (or robots for that matter, Durran)

People often look at my stats and are like “typical Asian”.
I have Math and Piano AND Debate (Mock Trial) and FBLA

Mock Trial is not debate. And I dunno. Maybe FBLA is typically Asian but most people on the collegiate debate circuit I know are not Asian. Maybe because they’re not hard sciences and math but are humanities programs?

because instead of debate, most asians do orchestra or band, play the cello or piano or violin, do lots of community service, do academic decathalon instead of FBLA, science olympiad, math competitions (AMC 10 and 12), math club, etc. maybe i am generalizing but that is just my opinion

I agree with ebonytear. There are Asians who may just seem “typical” but they might actually love “piano, math, etc.” and do them because they love them. It’s about what you enjoy doing and what you really have passion for. I’m Asian, and I play piano and violin because I love them, though I quit lessons a long time ago. I also love math. But I love writing and language arts more, and I hate science and social studies.

I Have An Asian Friend:
Football
Wrestling
Basketball
Fluent in Chinese
Trumpet
Ballroom Dancing

Wierdest azn ever.

I suck at math.

I don’t play tennis, piano or golf.

I play lacrosse

I’m in a rap group

darther - i’m one of those.

I despise Science and Math. I’m a Sophomore and am in Geometry. I’m even doubting if I should shoot for Honors AlgebraII.

While other Asian guys are chatting with their friends “Man, this time, I’m gonna double on Math. I’m going to take AP Stats and Calculus” I’m like, Oh My Freaking Goodness.

In Science, I decided between APES or APBio. I just decided APES and do APBio in Senior Year. NOOOOOOO AP PHYS or APCHEM for me.

Academic competitions? BLEH… Hate them. They are those MATH OLYMPIAD and Science related competitions… and robotics… UGH…

Im not MATH-SCIENCE brainer, that’s it. But I think it in the positive way. At least I’m a CREATIVE (?) asian, due to the fact that I do not compete with all those math-science asians. I’m strong in Languages and History, though.

i like writing more than math… although i’m possibly better at math. actually i have no idea, it really depends on the teacher o__O

but for everything else i fit the asian stereotype. darn. =p it doesn’t really bother me though. i like piano. and viola. and math competitions. science olympiad i’ll pass on though, haha.

i don’t think the other asians or whatever really stand out much. at least not to me.

-I’m Indian
-I speak six languages
-President of FBLA
-Editor of school newspaper
- Attended TASP last summer
- I’m planning International Studies/Law/Marketing/Economics related major next year as a Harvard freshman.

Yes, I have the perfect SAT’s and GPA, but that’s besides the point. Do whatever you want, even if it’s something stereotypical.

I don’t play an instrument, but I am good at math, not science. O yeah and low SAT score (1810)

the assumption that asians are like that isnt so true… there a plenty that are the opposite. i dont think they standout particularly.

Well I’m Indian, girl, soph

-Debate (yayy I’m LD captain next year :D)
-Model United Nations
-Community Service(so far, 80 hours)

-This summer, I will be attending Stanford Newspaper by the Bay workshop and Victory Briefs Institute debate camp.
-Hoping to major in Journalism/Mass Communications or International Relations/Poli Sci.

COUNT ME IN!!! I quite piano in 5th grade, I’m not completely in love with math, I despise detest and abhor science, and my SAT score is low too (1940).

Yes, he DESPISES science. Lol,.

I actually played the piano and was a math prodigy for a bit. Then i went into sports. BasketbalL MVP babay. =]

Same here… I don’t play piano, do EC Math, or anything. I built my own computer, and Me and three friends are starting a computer building and selling business this summer (just locally).
