I remember this time last year when I was confused about everything. CTOPS and housing and visiting and so on. It was just a horrible time. Anyway, I don’t want anyone to be as lost as I was. Now I’m approaching the end of my first year and consider myself pretty well informed. So if there’s anything you want to know, no matter what it is, don’t be afraid to ask. If there’s something I don’t know, I probably know of a place where you can get more info.

im a out of stater considering unc…

will it be weird to fit in?

Is there a lot of parties?

Sports Management major? if there is one

Advise for a out of stater to get it?

As for fitting in, you’ll be just fine. I know alot of out of staters worry about that problem, but one of my best friends here is from out of state and she’s adjusted to everything. The people here are very welcoming.

There’s always something going on here. You’ll have no problem finding parties :)

I’m pretty sure you can major in Sports Administration, but Sports Management would probably have to be taken at a grad school somewhere else.

I don’t know what its like trying to get in from out of state, but I imagine you would have more pressure to perform better academically and in other areas. My advice is just to make sure you’re well rounded. Besides, if you don’t get in your 1st year, you can always transfer at a later time.

hey carolinagrl12! do you know alot about greek life? could you possibly tell me about the diff sororities? i might want to rush but im an oos so i have no idea what greek life is like

I don’t know much about sororities, but is there any particular type your interested in? There are a lot, so if you have anything in mind I’ll try to help.

not really anythign specfic just an overall opinon on greek life in general would be good thanks!

The sororities on campus have really great reputations. A couple of my suitemates joined sororities and they love them. I do know that they can be a bit of a commitment, so you should make sure you have enough free time to be involved. The sororities that I am familiar with do a lot of volunteer service work. They also are very friendly (from what I know of). If there’s anything thing else I can help you with, let me know.

Hey…i’ve narrowed my college list to two schools right now and UNC is one of them, but i want to get some opinions from a current student…
Does the huge student-body size prevent you from having many undergrad research opportunities??? How big are the classes??? Is it true that UNC is divided among groups that kinds of segregate the student population??? How are the parties and would i feel left out if im not into “partying”? How are the dorms and the restrooms? is it the kind were there are about 8 restrooms per floor or are there suites?? How about the food? Good? Bad? Anything else you might want to tell me to help me with my decision???

Thanks in advance!!!

Does UNC allow students to add to there meal plan in the middle of the semester?

Like if I purchased one meal plan and low on meals, will I have a chance to purchase some more?

marydolphin

First of all, despite the size, there are countless opportunities for undergrad research. There is an emphasis put on it, because UNC is proud to be a research institution.

The classes can be large, but it is usually intro classes that a lot of people place out of.

UNC students are the friendliest students ever, in my slightly biased opinion. There is not any segregation that I have seen.

As for partying, there is a party scene, but there is plenty to do beyond that. I am not a partier, but I still have a blast on weekends. As for housing, there are a couple of other threads you should look at. Same with food.

Gator,
You cannot add meals in the middle of the semester. It is better to be conservative in your estimates for food though.

I was going to start a “Ask a Current SOPHOMORE” thread just to out-do you, but I decided against it :-p

Thank you for the responses!

UNC does seem to live up to its amazing reputation. I’m trying to schedule a visit in the next few weeks so i can finally make my decision between two schools including UNC.

Also, thanks for the links to other threads, but the one about “Best Food” just talks about food off campus. How is the food on campus? Is it cafeteria style? Healthy? Repetitive?

Thanks!!!

The food on campus is alright. The dining halls, Lenoir and Ram’s Head, are all you can eat. The food is usually ok. Nothing special, but not terrible either. Some people have had issues with both, but I have never had any trouble with either. The food is healthy enough. The salad bar is always pretty decent, and the food in the vegetarian section is usually pretty good. Beyond that, the other foods are ok.

Beyond that, the bottom of Lenoir is open for lunch on weekdays and has A subway, Chik-fil-a, mexican place, japanese food, pizza, and burgers available. Ram’s head has a subway in the market and a starbucks. Also, in the Union, Alpine Bagel is open everyday.

Here is another thread, it has a few more things about food on campus, and off.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-north-carolina-chapel-hill/647708-food.html

Gator,

If you run out of meals, you could add money to your flex or expense accounts and buy food at other places, such as Mainstreet Lenoir or Ram’s Market.

Hi carolinagrl12

I have won he carolina scholar award. Getting classes of your choice at public universities they say is sometimes difficult. Would being a carolina scholar help? Are there any advantages being a carolina scholar to want to give up ivy leagues? I am confused. Can you please advise?

Macunix,

Congratulations on your award!

As far as getting your choice of classes, I wouldn’t say it’s easier, but you should have more choices. I assume you will be an honors student, which gives you the opportunity to take honors classes (I think).

From what I’ve heard about being a CS, you have lots of enrichment opportunities that other students do not receive. You have the chance to gain leadership experience and work with mentors. That may be something that you can’t receive at other universities.

I have a couple of random questions:

Is there a Wal-Mart or Target withing walking distance?

Are there malls nearby or accessible with one bus?

Would u recommend bringing a car, or would I do just fine without one?

There is not a walmart or target within walking distance. I don’t think that buses go to either of those.

There are malls nearby, and they are accessible with just one bus.

You will be fine without a car. It really is not necessary to have one here.

Actually there are buses that go to Walmart and Target. There’s actually a Supertarget near Southpoint.

My bad. I forgot that there are buses that go to Southpoint.
