it depends on your specific school whether calc is required – it is not required in harpur. you really need to become familiar with the requirements for whatever school you will be attending – they are fairly easy to find on the website. a forum such as this is really not the best place for you to learn about what is or is not required.

there is a gen ed req’ment that you have a course that satisfies the “math/reasoning” requirement. as noted on the ap chart cited in a prior post, a 3,4,or5 on AP Stats will statisfy this gened requirement.

I read the chemistry department is really good, but it sure doesn’t seem like a popular major. As far as “hard science”, the most popular major are biology. Is this true?

The cost of room and board is $10,612 and it says (including meals) on my financial award. So umm… how does the meal system work? how much do you get for food?

re meal plan – the way the meal plans work is a little unique from what i’ve seen at other schools. there is a choice of plans which each cost different amounts, but they all work the same way. each plan includes a fixed amount to cover the operating expenses of the dining services. the amount above that fixed amount (which is the same for all of the plans) is the amount you have available to spend on food for the semester. because they’ve charged everyone the up front cost of overhead, the actual price for the food in the dining halls is pretty low. you pay a la carte – ie for each item you take – and its deducted from the amount you had available to spend. but if you run out, it is very easy to add additional money. if you have extra money left at the end of the semester, it rolls over into the next semester as long as you are still on a meal plan.

i have a question … i was told by someone in the decker school of nursing … whoever in that department that reviews applications that mine hasn’t been reviewed and doesn’t have a decision and how they aren’t accepting anymore student into decker. does this mean that i will not get into Binghamton at all ? … not even as an undeclared major ?

There is one building per community that offers break housing. CIW’s break housing building is nicer than the rest, the rest are just like any other building in that community. There’s usually one break where the dorms close per semester, Thanksgiving and Spring Break.

I currently have to pay $13,000 in loans for bing. Do you think theres any chance I can get it lowered? Theres no change in my family income/situation tho.
I heard that you can negotiate your finaid, but that seems to be scholarships, and I didnt get any scholarships.

Well Dickinson is definitely the least liked dorm community on campus, so I would not go for that. I live in Hinman and think it’s the best other than Mountainview. Remember you can always change communities other than to Mountainview.

the dorms are grouped into residential communities – dickinson, newing, college in the woods, hinman and mountainview ([Binghamton University - Residential Life - Communities](http://reslife.binghamton.edu/communities.html)) – that is different than the learning communities which were housed at the different residential communities.

mountainview is the newest and most difficult to get into. when you sign up for housing again in the spring for the following year, your priority is based on where you are living – the highest priorities are for staying where you are, the lowest are for moving to another community – generally, you can move to another community, but mountainview is difficult, if not impossible, to move into from another community because it is popular and people tend to stay there if they get in to it freshman year.

I guess if my son decides to attend, he’ll just have to hope for a decent placement freshman year.

By the way, as BU was overcrowded with the number of freshmen this year, and I expect the same for next year due to the economy, where does that leave upperclassmen? Is there enough hosing on campus for them should they choose to remain on campus? Any forced triples for next year other than for freshmen?

first of all, the admissions office has been trying very hard to limit enrollment for next fall to avoid the problems of this past fall – until final admissions numbers are known though, no one knows how well they did at this.

upperclassmen get to sign up for housing in the spring for the following fall – rooms in each of the residential colleges are set aside for freshmen and freshmen/transfers can also put in any spaces left in other rooms. if you are living on campus and pay your housing fee for the following year, you should be able to get a room on campus – -priority works such that if you want to stay where you are you have the highest priority. so upper classmen don’t get forced off campus, in fact this past fall they claimed that one of the reasons so many freshmen were tripled was because more upperclassmen chose to stay on campus. but alot of upperclassmen do choose to live either in university apartments or off campus.

in addition, they are in the process of rebuilding the two oldest dorm communities - dickinson and newing – they are doing this gradually – they are opening the first new newing building this august and then tearing down old dorms to make room for additional new dorms – the entire project is supposed to be done in 2013. the new dorms will be bigger than the old so there will be a net increase in on campus housing.

Sorry, maybe I missed this when going through this thread but how exactly does housing for freshmen work? Is it like a lottery system or something?

Can I still pursue Buisness even though I am in Harper?
I heard buisness isnt an option for majoring unless you transfer into School of Management. But…what if you are in Harper and decide to major in buisness? How will you go from there?
