Ask a Grownup

Please check out my new thread in Parents section. This is your chance to ask an anonymous parent for advice .The best part is you don’t have follow the advice if you don’t like it! You could even use a friend’s user name for complete discretion ! Just ask away.

grownup lol

My husband says this too ! Seriously,I am a mom of 4, with an ivy league kid,as well as a son who was in jail abroad for 8 months .I have had alot of interesting life experiences which MIGHT be of interest. So, do you have a question. LOL ?

I wouldn’t mind hearing about the 8 months in foreign prison…

What do you want to know about prison abroad?

It sounds like an interesting, if unfortunate, story. Was it in relation to a study abroad program? If it’s too personal, I understand.

I find it a bit odd that a “grownup” is so eager to engage high-school/college students in what I assume would be intimate conversations, as the issues discussed would obviously be delicate ones. Of course, I highly doubt you have these intentions…

fauxmaven, I thought of you when the phone rang at 4AM. D2, who is studying abroad, got robbed while on a weekend trip to Rome. When the dust settled, I realized there could have been much worse middle of the night calls…can’'t imagine what you went through for 8 months!

Kalthar- I’m seconding that… especially considering there’s a parents forum.

The college life forum isn’t necessarily the place for this.

This was posted originally in the parents forum and OP was advised to post here since there aren’t very many students who post in the parents forum. That said, there are plenty of students who DO post in the parents forum to provide student perspectives and to find more riveting conversation than, “how do I cover up diarrhea sounds in the dorms?!?!?”

I am surprised this thread was not better received, since students post in the parents forum looking for parent perspectives pretty much daily.

^My bad, blame my twisted thinking on the internet. How it has corrupted us all…

Kalthar- Why do you doubt my intentions ? I am an empty nest mom,who also lost her job,and I am a good person who has alot of free time… why are you suspicious ?I just thought it might be entertaining for random students and parents to engage in some dialogues . By the way, my jailed son was not on any study abroad program program when he was arrested. He thought he could get away with mailing a package from point A to point B and making a nice fee,but that didn’t happen .When the package showed up ,he was asked if it was his package. When he answered yes, he was thrown down on the floor and handcuffed .We received a call from the Embassy that he was on his way to a detention center. We were unable to speak with him until he was released 8 months later .We spent 60 K in legal fees to get him out. He was actually employed in that country at the time he was arrested.

^ I’m sorry if I offended you. Sometimes though you just have to take a step back and realize you’re on the internet. It’s hard to believe the validity of anything. Again, really sorry

It’s really strange that you think that we all have endless questions to ask you. Most of us have “adults” in our lives who we would ask if we had questions about anything, and I’m not even sure what you think we would ask. This seems super creepy to me, imo. No offense.

RoxSox, there are many students on CC, and IRL that don’t have an adult to talk to and ask basically any question. There is nothing creepy about fauxmaven opening up a dialogue for any students to ask questions. It is a great opportunity for those who can’t open up to an adult in their “real life” to get a parental answer here.

If you have a question about a cc member you can check their history. You could have easily seen fauxmaven’s previous posts and determined that she was in fact a parent. You would have seen posts where she has interacted with other parents and told her story regarding her son’s arrest. Believe me, it makes any parents blood run cold just to read it.

Students come daily, seriously every day, in the various parent forums to ask questions so they can get a more well rounded opinion. The topics range. A lot of times it’s how to communicate information effectively to their parents. Amazingly we are parents and can be of assistance. I’m glad that you have adult mentors in your life. This is hardly the case for most. Students with parents who are physically there are not always supportive. They don’t always understand the college application process. There may be language barriers.

There is nothing insincere about feauxmaven’s offer of ‘ask a parent’. I think it would be an awesome forum on it’s own. I come here every so often so I can see what students are dealing with, what are they facing, what should I talk to my kids about. You have all followed threads where a roommate has gotten sick on the floor at 2am only to disappear for days. What do you do? There are ways to address this without looking like a jerk. Your first instinct at 2am probably isn’t the right one given the reactions posted. We’ve had some great conversations based on posts in the student forum.
