Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

I have a question. If you change majors does it effect Merit you were offered? i.e. If Im excpeted as an ME with some Merit but what to change to Comp Eng, can I and does it change the Merit offer?

ALSO- How is your CE Program?

Thanks

Hi,

You previously gave the states of the accepted students in the chem major. Could you please give the stats for the students accepted to the Business school?

Thanks

Hello! I have a few questions. I am a H.S. junior and visited TCNJ in March and really liked the campus. Is there a more in depth tour TCNJ offers where I can get to know the school/campus life better or would you just advise I take the regular two hour tour again?

If I decide in the fall that TCNJ is my clear cut #1 choice, how much does it help me to apply early decision? And if I apply early decision, can I stil apply early ‘action’ to another school that doesnt offer early decision like TCNJ? I do understand that ED is binding and EA is not.

I understand that TCNJ looks at my entire record from high school, but I think the admissions person at my tour said that of my grades and my SAT, that my grades were the more important of the two. Is my memory correct on that? Thank you for helping me!

I am a high school senior. I was accepted to TCNJ and I am currently torn between TCNJ and The College of Wooster in Ohio. I would prefer to attend TCNJ because it is closer to home but I am concerned about attending TCNJ because I am not yet sure what to major in and I have heard that it may be hard for a student going in undeclared to graduate in 4 years from TCNJ. I also hear a lot about the value of a well-rounded education at small liberal arts colleges and I wonder if I can find that same well-rounded education at TCNJ. I am well aware of TCNJ’s excellent academics, I am just concerned that the school will not be a fit for me since I am undecided about my future. Will there be a counselor to guide me in choosing courses before first semester? If I go in undecided will it be more difficult for me to be admitted to certain majors? Will I be limited in the majors I can choose?

Thecats – I cannot make any specific references to your daughter’s application over CC and with the limited and general information you have provided. If you would like, a counselor can certainly go over your daughter’s decision with her over the phone. I suggest you call our office at 609-771-2132, M-F 8:30 – 4:30 so that a counselor can discuss that with her.

Carolynmama – At this point, it is too late to start as a Transfer student in the Fall of 2013. If you would like to start as a transfer in Spring of 2014, the deadline to apply is November 1st.

pinkdiann – First, congratulations on being admitted! You will be able to take bio classes as part of your liberal learning requirement. Please remember, though, that you are locked in as an English major through your first semester. This means that some of the classes you take your first semester will be those that all English majors will take. If you successfully switch your major to a biology major after being on campus, those 2 or so English classes that you take your first year will count as liberal learning/elective courses.

wtped64 – No. Merit aid is not affected if you switch majors. For more detailed information about our CE program, follow this link: [Electrical and Computer Engineering](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>http://electrical-computerengineering.pages.tcnj.edu/)

slmx38 – Those stats are similar. Admitted Business students averaged a 1300/1600 on the SAT (29 on the ACT) and were in the top 10% of their HS grad class.

Schooltimeguy – The only different visit experience we offer prospective students would be our fall Open Houses (Lion’s Days). On these days we have presentations from the Deans and Assistant Deans of each school that give a more in-depth look at the programs. On these days we also offer the regular campus tour.

Just like at any college, applying ED gives you a slight advantage because you are committing to the school with your application. At TCNJ, however, the admitted student averages and acceptance rate is not too far off from our general student averages and acceptance rates. You can apply EA elsewhere as long as you honor your ED agreement with TCNJ should you be admitted.

You remembered correctly. We spend more time looking at your transcript, the classes you took and the grades you go in them than we do evaluating your SAT/ACT scores.

Outrageousxolii – Although this is confidential, I’m pretty sure I spoke with you on the phone the other day
For our students who are in an Open Options Program, you will be paired with typically the Assistant Dean or a Program Coordinator that will help advise you each semester. Your first semester courses are mostly laid out for you. After that, you can work with your advisor to make sure you are trying out all the different majors you may be considering. This advisor will also help you declare your major when you settle on one. Because of the liberal learning core, the classes that you take while you are deciding on a major will all work towards your graduation requirement to help you graduate in 4 years. Switching into certain majors may require an application of sorts set up by that department. It will be based completely off your work at TCNJ, so to make sure to do well your first couple of semesters as an open options student. You will be able to select any major at the college and your advisor will help you switch into that major, regardless of what school it is in. Ultimately, you are going to have to choose between TCNJ and University of Ohio based on what feels right to you! I personally believe that the liberal learning core is a great way for our ‘undecided’ students to find their passion and The College knows that a liberal learning education sets students up for success after graduation. Good luck with your decision!

Hi @AdmissStaffTCNJ

I am very interested in the biomedical engineering major at TCNJ, but I have the desire to end up in medical school. Is biomedical engineeirng a good major at TCNJ with the motivation of going to med school? Could you possibly provide some statistics on BME major’s acceptance rate to med school?

Also, could you provide statistics on this years acceptance rate for students who applied for the biomedical engineering major at TCNJ, as well as the average statistics of its applicants? I’d like to see it’s competitiveness.

Finally, is it is possible for an accepted biomedical engineering major to switch to a biology major before classes start this fall or during freshman year?

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your reply! Just a few more questions if ok.

Do you know when the Lion’s Days will be in the fall? Will they be prior to the ED deadine?

Does TCNJ factor in the reputation of my high school in the admissions process? I ask because my public school has an excellent reputation in my state and is highly competitive.

I see people asking about the accepted rate stats for certain majors. Can you tell me what the stats would be for Early Education? Thanks again for all your helpful answers!

If I major in Marketing with a double minor in Biology and Chemistry, is it possible to graduate in four years?

Amipat01 – I think any major could potentially be a good major with the motivation of going to med school. Opportunities in research, internships and community engaged learning for all of our students will provide you an excellent edge on your med school applications. Additionally, the Medical Careers Advisory Committee will help you prepare, regardless of major, for professional school for any of the medical careers (MD, PA, PT, OT, veterinarian, dentist, etc). This program has an 84% acceptance rate into medical professional schools on the first try. I can’t speak specifically to the biomedical engineering program and the acceptance rate into Medical School, but if you follow this link to our One Year Out survey, you can see where our Biomedical Engineering students are going to after college. Keep in mind, that not all are interested in using Biomedical Engineering as a vehicle to get into medical school.
Major change request for our admitted students (before they start classes in the fall) is at the discretion of our Director of Admissions. We encourage all of our students to apply into the major they are most passionate about. Once students are on campus, the process to change their major goes through the individual departments. Each department has a different process depending on how many seats are available and how many students are looking to switch into that major. Certain departments have required pre-requisites , minimum GPAs and letters of recommendations in years past, so it may not always be possible for students to change their major after the first semester.

Aimpat01 & Schooltimeguy - I hesitate to share specific admissions statistics for any one academic program because it not only varies from one program to the next, but it also especially varies from one year to the next depending on the volume and quality of students applying. If you’re curious about the current year’s applicant numbers, you can call our office to speak with a counselor (609.771.2132). This year over 11,000 students applied to TCNJ. We offered admissions to just over 40% of those students. Typically, they fell in the top 10% of their graduation class and have an SAT score just under 1300.

Schooltimeguy – The dates for our fall Lion’s Days will be released sometime in August on our website. There will be 2 Lion’s Days before the ED deadline, in addition to many other visit opportunities. Yes, we do factor the competitiveness of a HS into the Admissions Process.

Jdog1202 – With proper planning that is certainly possible. When you apply and if you are accepted and choose to enroll at TCNJ, we will only allow you to start with one major. You will not be able to add any minors or second majors until you have been on campus for one semester. When you start planning your courses for your second semester, you should bring that up with you Academic Advisor so that you two can work that into your academic plan.

Will TCNJ be taking anyone off the waiting list? If so, when will this generally take place?

Collegedreams29 - Each year, the wait list varies. In years past, we’ve pulled many students off the wait list and as late as July. In other years, we’ve only been able to pull a few students and closed as early as late May. The wait list is still open and as we find seats available, we will be reviewing our wait list students for those seats.

Not sure if you could answer this question, but I am going to be s freshman in the fall and I have already been pre-registered for all 3 classes on PAWS aside from my FSP
however, these are not the classes that are on my first semester sequence sheet. For example, I need to take calculus and was not registered for pre-calculus/calculus a/calculus b at all. My concern is that if I wait until orientation, then the classes I need to take will be filled and I will not be able to take them. Is there any way I could fix this now or do I have to wait until orientation? Thank you for your help!

I put the classes I wanted/needed in the shopping cart with my FSPs. I’m not sure if that was right but it can’t hurt!

If you guys are unsure about your courses, you can call Records & Registration and they can help clarify the situation for you. Their phone number is 609.771.2141. They are pre-registering you for classes based on AP/IB credit you have sent to TCNJ, SAT/ACT scores, placement tests and your major. Whatever they are pre-registering you for, should be correct, and will be confirmed and finalized by a faculty member on your Orientation day.

Tried to call 609-771-2141 - but got message “number not in service”. I was wondering if the textbooks are on-line so that I can load them onto my laptop instead of buying “physical” books. Trying to decide what laptop to get and this would make a difference as to the hard drive size that I choose.

Hi Jdog1202 - I’m not sure why the 609.771.2141 number didn’t work. I just checked it now, and it seems to be working. You can type in the ISBN number of your textbooks into any book retailer and they should be able to tell you if there is an electronic copy.

Hello

My son is looking into the 7 year medical program at TCNJ as a freshman. He is currently ranked in the top 2% of his class but his SAT score doesn’t quite meet the requirement as stated on the website which all states no exceptions. Would he not be considered automatically due to his SAT score alone?

Hi ekmom12 - Yes, that is correct. Although we take a holistic approach to reviewing applications for general admissions, the 7 year medical is a highly competitive and special program. For the 7 year medical program alone, students who do not meet the minimum SAT requirement AND the class rank requirement will not be advanced to the first round of interviews.

AP scores are in! Looking at TCNJ’s policy towards AP credit, I’m a little unsure about what potential credits a student would receive, according to this website [Advanced Placement | Advising Resources](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey) and using the most recent AP Legend.

My question is if a student receives a 3 on the AP English Lang. and Comp. exam, but a 5 on the AP US History exam, will he/she get credit for WRI 102 (Academic Writing)? Also, “Liberal Learning” is a phrase found on multiple classes. What type of class is “liberal learning?” Is there a certain amount of “liberal learning” classes each student has to take?

Any response would be very helpful. Thank you!

When do incoming TCNJ freshmen find out who their roommates are? It’s July 10th and I still have not heard! Every other school has assigned roommates, and I’m anxious to hear/meet mine! I was told you couldn’t request one. Any info is greatly appreciated!
